On Friday 2nd October the year eight students took part in a range of activities to develop their understanding of careers. The day kicked off with a ‘career speed dating activity’. Students met and ‘grilled’ the employees about their jobs. This was followed by a tailored advice session from Durham University and Newcastle College, a self employed Christmas decorator as well as the careers guidance team from Northumberland County Council.
The day was run in partnership with Carole Richards from Northumberland Education Business Partnership and was also supported by one of our parents, Mr Oliver who stepped in to represent his role in the NHS as Clinical psychologist.
The afternoon sessions were jam packed with fun and information from the following…
- Police Service
- Fire Service
- Army
- RAF
- Navy

Quotes
Mrs Razzaqi
“At Newminster we believe high quality, independent careers guidance is crucial in helping pupils emerge from school more fully rounded and ready for the world of work. The careers day is a vehicle for every pupil to develop high aspirations and consider a broad and ambitious range of careers. Inspiring every pupil through more real-life contacts with the world of work can help them understand where different choices can take them in the future.”
Mrs Richards
“There is a clear moral, social and economic purpose to improving careers provision for all young people. It is essential that all young people must be given the chance to gain more experiences of the World of Work and be inspired to see possibilities and goals that are worthwhile and relevant to them. Employers from all sectors are concerned about the lack of workplace skills such as communication and teamwork so to inspire and educate our young people, to help them prepare for the World of Work we need every school to appreciate the importance of employer-engagement. A lack of good advice is a barrier to social mobility.”
