Book Fair 2018

29th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

Thanks to your tremendous support and generosity, our annual Book Fair was a great success – despite the enforced holiday in the middle!

We took £1,953 which raised a magnificent £1,172 in commission to spend on books for prizes and to support English lessons.

Once again, a big “THANK YOU”!

Everyone is involved in making our Fairs a success: our customers (of course!) but also our student Fair Makers.

A BIG BIG “THANK YOU” to Ellen Davison, Iona Lane and Anna Jakubovics who gave up lots of lunchtimes to staple together more than 500 letters and Fair fliers publicising our Fair;

Will Cottiss, Ellen, Iona and Anna who provided lots of support at break times during Fair Week and Ellen and Anna who helped distribute orders and tidy up on the last day.

There was a lot to do and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Celebrating World Book Day

We collected £221.07 to support the work of Book Aid International in getting books to children in parts of the world that have none. Thank you to all those who supported this worthwhile charity which makes it possible for children in desperate need to learn to read, the first step towards helping themselves out of poverty.

The number of students spending the day in character this World Book Day was truly staggering and a real pleasure to witness!  The costumes were tremendous – do take a look at the pictures the news story.

If you don’t have time, here are just a few of the 20 prize-winners:

Dizzy
Peter Pan and his shadow
Darquesse aka Valkyrie Cain

Thank you to everyone who dressed up, whether or not you made your own costume. Your efforts contributed to making World Book Day special – and that’s what it’s all about!

Enormous thanks to Iona, Anna, Will in Y7 and Ellen in Y8 for patiently naming more than 500 World Book Day tokens so everyone could be sure of getting one in time for our Book Fair.  You really are heroes!

British Science Week

28th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

We held our annual British Science Week day on March 9th this year.

British Science Week (BSW) is a national  ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths – featuring fascinating, entertaining and engaging events and activities across the UK for people of all ages.

British Science Week is a great opportunity to get enthused about science. The theme this year is exploration and discovery. It’s about encouraging everyone to explore science in the world around them, thinking about everyday discoveries and how they affect our lives.

On the day, pupils from all year groups took part in 5 workshops and had the opportunity to build things, solve mysteries, watch demonstrations, ask questions and learn a lot!

BSW 2018 saw 25 workshops on offer from a range of external partners. Thank you to all of them for coming in to make the day such as success. To give you a flavour of the creativity, inspiration and fun that British Science Week brought to our school take a look at our photo gallery by clicking ‘continue reading’.

Spring 2 Update

26th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

U13s football

The boys have now added a County Cup Final place to the season after a 1-0 victory over Ponteland in the Semi. The team dominated the first half with another quality goal from James and a very solid performance from our defensive unit. The second half saw Ponteland grow into the game but we only allowed half chances until a frantic last few minutes. Their goalkeeper decided to park himself in our half of the pitch but neither side could capitalise on this and so the game ended 1-0. Well done boys!

Special mention goes to James and Tom who have represented our Area team this season and have also had a fantastic run in their equivalent National Cup. James scored in their 6-0 demolition of Tameside in the Quarter-Final. Tom then scored a ‘Worldie’ in the Semi-Final against Liverpool to take the game into extra-time at 2-2. Unfortunately the boys got beat on penalties but they can hold their heads high, as they are a phenomenal team with important games still to come.

Girls Rugby League

The rugby season has now started for the girls, with a tournament for each of our Y7 and Y8 teams.

The Y8s started where they left off last year with dominant performances from both squads and have set themselves up nicely for the next round of fixtures in March. Special mention goes to the new girls in the teams, Olivia, Chloe, Ami, Daisy, Louisa, Bronwen, Bella, Leah and Emily. This not only means we now have 2 large squads to enter into these competitions but they definitely had a positive impact on their teams’ performances.

In the second round of fixtures I tinkered with the teams to put all the more dominant players on one team to give the other girls chance to get much more involved in their squad. The stronger squad had a steady start in the first 5 minutes of their first game but then turned on the style and went through the gears to win all their games. I was also very pleased with the other team who recorded a win and 2 loses but more importantly the games let these these girls shine and more opportunities on the ball. This of course will now give me a huge dilemma as to who to pick for the Regional Finals in April they have now qualified for!

The Y7s also had a very good start to the season. Considering this was their first lot of games ever, there were some very strong performances from many of the team which led to a very pleasing set of results of three wins, one draw and one loss.

The second round of games also showed improvements as the tournament went on. After an initial loss to Seaton Sluice the team performances and organisation improved hugely and deservedly won the final 2 games.

The competition at this age has been very close and I’m pleased to say with these results the girls have also qualified for the Regional Finals in April.

Rugby Match Report March 2018

The rugby season has now come to a close with the annual 7 fixtures taking place for the U12 and U13 teams.

On Thursday 22 March the U13 boys’ team travelled to Bede Academy in the County Cup. Playing under some new and innovative rules the players adapted well to the conditions and played some intelligent rugby.

In the group we played Bede Academy and Dame Allan’s coming out comfortable winners in both games and progressing into the main cup draw. In the main cup we were paired with Newcastle School for Boys (NSB) and RGS, both private schools who take their 7s rugby very seriously.

In our first game, against NSB, the boys played some unbelievable rugby and comfortably won 35-5. In our final game we knew we had to beat RGS to win the competition and despite a fantastic start the boys were beaten by a better team on the day.

To finish runners up and beating two out of the three private schools was a remarkable achievement by all the players.

On Friday 23 it was then the U12 turn to try out 7s for the first time. They also had to use the new rules and despite having extremely limited time they adapted well and gave 100%. After a solid start against St Thomas More, Gateshead in which we won 27-12 we then outclassed and outplayed Bede Academy to win 41-5. Our final group game was against RGS who once again proved too skilful and despite a spirited performance we lost the game.

Coming second in the group we entered the runners up play-off where we lost to Dame Allan’s to finish the tournament 4th overall.

With very little time together and no school rugby this year I was extremely proud of the effort from all the players. There was some exceptional tackling and rucking which I am excited to see develop next season.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players who have trained and played this year. I would also like to thank the Head Teachers of both Newminster and Chantry for their support and allowing the teams out of school. Finally I would like to thank the PE staff from both schools for their support this season.

Mr Shaw

U13s girls cricket

Well done to our Y7/8 girls team who won the Lady Taverners Area Cricket title at Ashington Leisure Centre. The team looked superb in the early games and set up a final against Ponteland who always produce a good team in this competition. Ponteland batted first and set the target for our girls. We batted very intelligently; steadily and efficiently progressing towards their score, until it came down to the last 2 balls, in which we needed 3 runs to win. Eadie and Ruby were in bat and after a great hit and indecision in the field the girls took advantage and got the runs with only one ball to spare. A fantastic result.

Unfortunately the girls couldn’t quite match this result at the County Finals but it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of this magnificent team.

Indoor Rowing

Well done to Lucy, Danny and Harry who went to the Regional Finals of this event competing against the best rowers in the North of England. They performed with immense strength and determination and can now officially class themselves as being within the top 10 rowers in the North of England.

Indoor Athletics

Well done to our girls Y7 team who achieved the Bronze medal in the County Finals event at Morpeth Leisure Centre. The girls performed very well against very strong opposition.

Sport Relief 18

Many thanks to all our guests and pupils for our involvement in this week of activities. As well as the many competitive school competitions; we have also had some football fitness sessions delivered by Mrs Stewart and Mrs Cromar, golf taster sessions delivered by Rookie Sports and the ‘Football cage’ from the Mustard Tree Trust.

Our sponsored walk was the main event on Wednesday and was hugely successful. We raised £419.75 and in combination with Chantry pupils we covered a cumulative distance of 4642.2km – which is the distance from Morpeth to Nigeria in Western Africa!!

North East Book Award

26th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

Do you have a high ZPD for your age?

Are you an enthusiastic and mature reader?

Do you enjoy talking about what you are reading?

Are you interested in meeting authors and getting your books autographed?

If so, would you like to help select this year’s winner of The North East Book Award?

We have about 10 weeks to read and discuss all 5 shortlisted books before voting!  Obviously, there’s more to say – and disagree about – as the weeks progress and more people have read more of the books!  As we read, we post reviews and comments on the NEBA website, which is closely monitored by the shortlisted authors.  Extracts are used for giant promotional posters that the authors like to take home as souvenirs. (You can see some outside Chantry library.)

When all participating schools have voted, we attend an evening prize giving at The Centre for Life.  We talk to the authors, get our books signed and generally have a good time.  The ceremony will be held in June.

Visit the NEBA website for more information – http://northeastbookaward.wordpress.com/

If you think you’d like to give this a go – and don’t forget that you need to write a bit about the books as well as reading them – find out more from Mrs Inverarity by Thursday, March 29th.

Meetings are as follows:

Tuesdays after school until 4:30pm in Newminster library – this group includes KEVI members and is limited to 15 students.

Thursday lunchtimes in Chantry library at 12:30pm

The books involved are:

  • The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club –  Alex Bell
  • Sky Chasers                                –  Emma Carroll
  • Kick                                              –  Mitch Johnson
  • A Place Called Perfect               –  Helena Duggan
  • 1,000 Year-Old-Boy                    –  Ross Welford

and we’re looking forward to seeing you!

Ofsted Inspection on Tuesday 13 & Wednesday 14 March

12th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

Newminster Middle School will be inspected by Ofsted on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 March.

It would be much appreciated if, as requested by Mark Evans, the Lead Inspector, parents of children at Newminster Middle School could find time to access Parent View online and answer the questions asked.

The inspection team will take note of the number of responses made, so the more parents that complete Parent View the better for our school.

Click to visit the Parent View website.

Click here to see the letter to parents from Ofsted.

Click here to see an Inspection Guide for Parents.

Ofsted would also like to hear the views of Students. You can do this by completing an online pupil questionnaire.

Your views are really important to Ofsted and, will help inspectors understand your experience of school. The questionnaire will close at 11am on 13 March, to give the inspection team time to look at the results. The questionnaires work in Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer 11, and on mobiles and tablets when you copy and paste the link into the browser.

It does not ask for your name, so you will not be identified from the responses you make.

Your continued support is much appreciated.

The North East Teen Book Award

7th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

On Monday evening, eleven students from Newminster and KEVI braved the weather and headed for the North East Teen Book Award ceremony at the Centre for Life in Newcastle.

They’d been reading and discussing the six shortlisted books since October and were looking forward to meeting the authors and discovering whether their personal favourite had won.

We all thought Paper Butterflies deserved to win. Even if it wasn’t our personal favourite, few of us will forget this compelling and cleverly structured story of an abused child let down by her father, her teachers and ultimately, America’s justice system.

In fact, obtaining justice was a common theme in this year’s shortlisted books. In Cell 7, the British legal system has been scrapped in favour of trial by TV reality show in which viewers decide who lives and who is eliminated. It’s the first of a trilogy, all of which are now available.

Berlin Love Song follows the fate of a Romani gypsy circus troupe and a member of the Hitler Youth during World War Two. It makes a fascinating and authentic read.

In Show Stopper, society is divided down the middle into Dregs – from whom everything, including dignity and self-determination, has been stripped and Pures – the ruling and privileged class. Gruesome reading!

Troublemakers explores the meaning of family and the influence of politics on an unusual family unit in contemporary London. It’s funny, thought provoking and intelligent.

Piglettes is a wickedly funny story featuring three overweight teenagers who deal with a public humiliation as pigs on Facebook by taking to the road and cycling to Paris. Their aim is to publicise the hypocrisy around self-image and promote home-made sausages by selling them along the way!

You can find out what we thought of these books on the NETBA website.

Extracts are selected from these reviews, made into posters and presented to the authors as souvenirs. This year, 29 of the 35 extracts selected by the organizer were from our school! We always have plenty to say!

Before the winner is announced, each author is introduced by a group of students, talks about their books and answers questions. This year, we were privileged to be asked to present two of the six shortlisted authors: Catherine Barter and her novel, Troublemakers and French author, Clémentine Beauvais with Piglettes.
Our students were able to get together for rehearsal only minutes before they were due on stage – but you can see how well they performed in these clips:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1egFTeNXfIXzH_g97ABRv2RYpMKB_wCNO
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1jWLs72zUHvFXo40GYAe_LnRxMIxoq4k0

As usual everyone, including parents, had a brilliant time and came home with piles of autographed books!

NETBA is challenging for Key Stage 3 as it’s aimed at Y10 and involves a considerable amount of reading and discussion – and some writing. Sometimes the stories are complex and the topics controversial. It’s greatly to the credit of our younger students that they’re so keen to have a go!

If you’d like to get involved with next year’s NETBA or with the junior event, NEBA (which starts very soon) please get in touch with Mrs Inverarity.
