Government Consultation on Sex and Relationship Education

15th January 2018Mrs K Shutler

Parents, teachers and students have been given the opportunity to help shape the new Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) curriculum.

In 2017, legislation was passed by Parliament to make relationships education compulsory in all primary schools and sex and relationship education compulsory in all secondary schools. The curriculum for the subject is also being updated.

The guidance for this change can be found here.

Please click here if you wish to complete the government consultation survey. It takes around 30 minutes and closes on 12 February.

Year 5 Performance of ’Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’

21st December 2017Mrs K Shutler

Year 5 performed the Christmas musical ’Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’ to
packed audiences this week.

The story …

The North Pole is in meltdown! Despite modernising and updating operations with a new hi-tech customer services centre, the elves are struggling to cope with the quantity and variety of presents being asked for….so Santa takes drastic action! By showing a particularly spoilt pair of siblings (and in turn the rest of us) how some unfortunate children have to spend Christmas time, he’s on a mission to convince the world that the best pressies we could wish for don’t cost a penny!

Well done to everyone who took part.

NMS and CMS Performance of Miracle Child at St James Church

21st December 2017Mrs K Shutler

Chantry and Newminster choir performed the Christmas musical ‘Miracle Child’ to a packed church full of parents, carers, governors, staff and friends of the schools at St James Church on Wednesday 20th December.

The story …

There were two ‘miracle children’ in the heart-warming Christmas musical ‘Miracle Child’: one was obviously the baby born at Bethlehem, but the other is materialistic Rikki, who is transformed as she learns the importance of giving.

What does the Christmas story mean to self-centred Rikki, 2000+ years after the miracle of Jesus’ birth? ‘Miracle Child’ begins with a family party on Christmas Eve, and Rikki expecting loads of presents – but having forgotten to find something to give her parents.

She attempts to sort out the problem in time for Christmas Day…

A poignant, entertaining and modern take on the Christmas story.

Simon Taylor, CEO of The Three Rivers Learning Trust said “Last night’s concert was superb! Well done to everyone involved with the production.”

Winter Update

18th December 2017Mrs K Shutler

U13s Football

A very successful half term for our fantastic U13s teams. The boys team started with a very difficult County Cup away tie at St Thomas More. The game was probably one of the best of the season and after a very tight first half (and a late free kick superbly executed by James McConnell) Newminster stepped up a gear in the second half and ran out 4-2 winners. Other goals were scored by Louie Gourlay (2) and a Josh Grenfell header.

Following this was a double header against Chantry in the National Cup and the County Cup. The first game was dominated by Newminster, with Chantry missing their star players from Y7. Final score, 3-0, with 2 from James and another strikers finish from Joe Lennox.
The second game was a much closer event with both teams at full strength. Newminster performed exceptionally well in the first half with goals from James, and Harvey Gillie’s first of the season. The first goal in the second half was always going to dictate the rest of the game and with Chantry scoring it, it made the game much more exciting but Newminster’s organised defense and hard work by the midfield kept the score to 2-1. On to the Quarter-Finals!
The U13s girls team have stormed through this half-term with two huge National Cup wins. An 8-0 away win at Kingsmeadow school from Gateshead, with goals from our usual goalscorers Orla Callaghan and Lucy McConnell (5), and also Lola Jackson and Ruby Gerrard weighing in with one each. This was followed by an 8-1 home victory against Easington Academy, this time Lucy getting just the 6 and 2 from Orla!

The Girls U13 Netball Team

The Girls U13 Netball Teamhave had an outstanding start in the South East Northumberland Netball League. They have played 5 matches, winning four of their games and losing only one of their games, by only one point!
The girls in the squad are:
Bella Deacon
Eadie Barakat
Esme Scott
Libby Dyer
Fran Takher
Lucy McConnell
Ruby Gerrard
Ellen Davison
Emma Gerrard
Orla Callaghan
Lucy McConnell is leading the way on the ‘oppositions choice of player of the match’, being voted for in 3 of their games, well done Lucy.
We are looking forward to the remaining fixtures, well done to all the girls in the squad, wishing them continued enjoyment and success in the New Year.

U13s girls rugby

Another successful event with dominant performances from both our teams at a very cold evening tournament at NCEA. Our usual star performers did extremely well, but it was also very enjoyable to see them all playing as a team, making sure all the girls were involved in all aspects of the game.

House events

The 2017/8 house events got off to a great start with the Cross Country event in which all pupils were expected to run and gain points for their house. Well done to everyone who took part! Special mention goes to individual winners – Reuben Elliott, Zoe Parker, Ben Hewitt, Kate Kennedy, Dylan Walker, Sophia Cunningham, James McConnell and Orla Callaghan. The best of these finishes was definitely the Y8 boys, in which there was only hair’s breadth between James, Tom Wales and Matty Walton.
This was closely followed by the house football, netball and handball competitions. Despite the freezing cold and the fire alarm almost putting a halt to proceedings, the events took place and again I’d like to congratulate everyone that took part for their house.
The scores so far: Collingwood – 45; Dacre – 59; Howard – 46; Mitford – 50.

Area Cross Country

The Area Cross Country took place at Queen Elizabeth II park, Ashington – we took the top 6 boy and girl athletes from Y7 and Y8 to this event. A fantastic effort from all our athletes (listed below) on this rare sunny day and particular congratulations to the following for finishing in the top 16 and qualifying for the County event on 18th January: Sophia (1st), Sophie (2nd), Ruby, Ava, Erin, Izzie; Dylan (5th – running most of it with one shoe!) Harry, Orla (4th), Fran and Matty. Special mention to the Y8s who were competing against Y9s. In terms of overall team finishes I’d like to say very well done to all our performers, including the Newminster Y7 girls team who were 1st and the Y8 girls team were top of the middle school teams.
7B Joe Donnison 8B Bella Deacon
7B Owen Gill 8B Josh Grenfell
7C Harry Brown 8B Tom Wales
7C Sophia Cunningham 8J Izzy Bird
7C Izzy Forster 8J Fran Takher

7U Ruby Houseman-Wilkinson 8R Lola Jackson
7U Aidan Jones 8R Sam Parker
7U Ava Nevins 8W Matty Walton
7U Dylan Walker 8W Noah Ions

Sports Partnership Volleyball tournament at Chantry

Well done to all our performers at this event. The games were particularly exciting and as the tournament went on the rallies got better and better. It was was pleasing to see so many Newminster pupils take part, and special mention goes to our Y8 boys 1st team that only just missed out on a place at the summer games with a narrow defeat to eventual winners Ponteland.

Indoor rowing at Cambois RC

Well done to all our participants at this event. After a few training sessions they all rowed with fantastic determination and commitment. See our full list of rowers below, but I’d like to congratulate in particular, Lucy (2nd), Danny (3rd) and Harry (4th) who have qualified for the Regional event against the best in the North East.
7B Rhianna Miller-Wallace
7B Harry Tong
7SW Grace Briddon
7SW Angus Byford
