Lockdown Limericks by NMS

22nd March 2021Sarah Hall

This year, at Newminster Middle School, we supported Comic Relief by creating and selling a book of limericks in aid of the charity – ‘Lockdown Limericks by NMS’. We encouraged all of our students and staff to write a humorous limerick to be included in the book and got hundreds!

The book was printed by Book Printing UK and has been sold with all profits being donated to Comic Relief. As an Artsmark Platinum school we wanted to create something to make everyone smile at this difficult time and pull together as a full school community. Doing this through poetry has also supported the pupils literacy and reading skills and they were delighted to read the finished book. I have attached some photos of the school community reading our book!

The pupils also came dressed in a splash of red for a non uniform day on Friday 19th March 2021.

Poetry by Heart 2021

5th March 2021Sarah Hall
As we prepare to welcome back all our pupils, Newminster is ready to ‘ hit the road running’ with a National  Poetry Performance Competition. All pupils will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of poetry, then learn and deliver it in their own unique way, embracing the musicality of language and the power of the voice.
In the first week back, our students will engage with specially commissioned, live ‘Poetry by Heart,  lessons, focussing on poetry delivery and the tricks for committing poetry to memory. Over the final two weeks of this term, pupils will be able to video their performances, ready to submit into the competition.
Please be assured that if your child does not have permission to be videoed, this will be respected.
Entries can be individual, pairs or small groups of up to five pupils. A ‘Freestyle ‘ category is also available, for pupils to perform self-penned material or any poem of their choice.
Exciting times! We look forward to having lots of fun and producing some fabulous performances.

Newminster Middle School – Sign2Sing Event 2021

1st March 2021Sarah Hall

This year, as with most things, we are doing the Sign2Sing Event a little differently. We would like all Newminster pupils and their families, if possible, to learn our Sign2Sing song and perform it on Tuesday 9th February 2021.

The song we have chosen to sing and sign this year is aptly named, ‘Fight Song’. You can find the tutorial video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTsxsUiGzXg. Pupils can practice this anytime they like but also during their specific music sessions on their home learning timetables.

On Tuesday 9th February, we are simply asking pupils and families to perform and either record themselves or take photos and post to Twitter (NMS) or Facebook (CMS and NMS Creative Arts page) and email them to Ms Jones (charlotte.jones@the3rivers.net) or post directly into our google folder, which is on the news section of the NMS website, so we can make a collage of us coming together as a community for this charity.

We think this is a terrific initiative which teaches the children a new and valuable skill as well as raising awareness of Deaf issues and we look forward to seeing your performances.

For more information about sign2sing, please visit www.sign2sing.org.uk

Thank you for supporting this exciting challenge and helping to “inspire a generation to sign”.

NMS Comic Relief 2021 – Humorous Limerick Book

23rd February 2021Sarah Hall

This year at Newminster Middle School we are hoping to support Comic Relief by
creating and selling a book of limericks in aid of the charity. We are therefore
encouraging all of our students to write and illustrate (if possible) a humorous limerick
and the funniest examples will be included in the book.

A limerick is a humorous poem consisting of five lines. The first, second, and fifth lines
must have seven to ten syllables while rhyming and having the same verbal rhythm.
The third and fourth lines should only have five to seven syllables; they too must
rhyme with each other and have the same rhythm.
Edward Lear, a famous British poet, and writer of literary nonsense, is widely
considered the father of the limerick. He didn’t write the first limerick — the first
limericks came about in the early 1700s and are often preserved in folk songs — but
he popularised the form.

There was an Old Man with a beard
Who said, “It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!”

This link will take you to the google doc to help students write their limerick. Students
also have access to this through their Google Classroom.

Students can send a typed limerick or a photo of their written and illustrated limerick
to either their class teacher or Ms Jones ([email protected]) before
Friday 12th March for a chance to have their work appear in the book.

If you would be interested in purchasing a copy/copies of the NMS Limerick Book in
aid of Comic Relief please complete the response form by clicking here no later than
9am on Friday 5th March 2021. The price to pre order this book is ÂŁ5.50 however the
actual cost of producing the book is ÂŁ4 (if we receive 200 plus orders or more) and all proceeds will go to Comic Relief. We can only proceed with producing the book if we
receive enough pre-orders. Once this has been confirmed payment can be made via
the School Gateway (www.schoolgateway.com) .

Many thanks for your support and we look forward to reading the students’ limericks
and producing a book containing work from our school community to make us all smile.

If you would like to share anything you create for us, please email it in to [email protected]. Watch out on Newminster twitter and the NMS and CMS CA facebook page for students’ work.
