Book Fair 2020
Thanks to your support and generosity, our annual Book Fair took £1,667. This has raised £1,000 in commission, which will be spent mostly on books to support English lessons but also on book prizes for the ‘Dress as a Book Character’ challenge.
Once again, “THANK YOU”!
Everyone is involved in making our Fairs a success: our customers, of course!
but also our student Fair Makers.
A BIG, BIG “THANK YOU” to Eva, Libby and Teddy in Y7 and Katie in Y5 who gave up lots of lunchtimes to staple together more than 500 letters and Fair fliers publicising our Fair
and to Eva, Libby, Teddy and Michael, who shared the tasks of support every break time during Fair Week, setting up the Fair, tidying up on the last day and distributing orders.
There was a great deal to do and we simply couldn’t have done it without you!
Celebrating ‘World Book Day’
We collected £217 to support the work of Book Aid International in getting books to children in parts of the world that have none. Thank you to all those who supported this worthwhile charity, which has extended its work into refugee camps and makes it possible for children in disadvantaged parts of the world to develop their reading.
The imagination and thought which your children have put into portraying a book character this year was a real pleasure to witness! Just take a look and see why judging was so difficult:
We had a staggering twenty winners!
Not to forget the Y5 team, you looked great!!
Thank you to everyone who made the effort to dress up. Your efforts contributed to making our ‘World Book Day’ 2020 special – and that’s what it’s all about!
Enormous thanks to Harriet in Y5, Brid in Y6 and Eva, Libby and Teddy in Y7 for patiently naming more than 500 World Book Day tokens so everyone could be sure of getting one in time for our Book Fair. You really are heroes!
All the schools in the Morpeth Partnership are coming together for Morpeth’s One Big Performance on Tuesday 31st March 2020 at Morpeth’s Riverside Leisure Centre from 10.00 am – 2.00 pm.
This event will highlight all the outstanding musical activities that are taking place every week across the partnership from first access musical experiences through to middle and high school ensembles and will involve over 500 pupils.
Music and the arts are so important in a young person’s educational journey and the day will provide an opportunity to share the love of music, enthuse and inspire the young people, create musical role models and strengthen both school and community partnerships.
Throughout the day students will be involved in a range of musical activities including body percussion workshops, singing and a musical quiz. They will also be involved in ceilidh dancing supported by The Cheviot Ceilidh Band at around 11.30 am.
Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools will be taking the Jazz, Ceilidh and Percussion Bands along with some drummers!
Just a reminder that our annual Book Fair is on now and will remain in school all week!
For every £1 we spend, 60p comes back to school for spending directly on our children to help promote a lifelong love of reading!
Take a look at the books on sale by visiting the Fair after school on Tuesday until 4:15pm
and check out the new specialist teenage case for our oldest students.

Together, we can make this Fair the best yet!
We’re inviting everyone to mark this special day by dressing up as a character or iconic object from literature. Children whose outfits display the most hard work, ingenuity and originality of interpretation will be eligible to choose a book prize (up to £7.99) from the Fair!
Please note that for the purpose of awarding prizes, children in a group effort will be judged as individuals.
Some of last year’s brilliant winners!

Children can dress up – and possibly win a prize – or dress down to suit their own personality.
Either way, please, please remind them to bring a contribution to help send books to children in areas of the world which have none. Children can’t learn to read without access to books and being able to read is a big step on the ladder towards dignity and self-determination.
You might be interested to know that publishers donate the books free of charge but it costs £2 to get each book to where it’s needed.
Books travel first by ship and air then complete their final journeys by whatever means are available – truck, motorbike, donkey, camel…. and even on bullock carts!
However they get to their destinations, they are hugely valued and appreciated when they do
so…
in advance…“Thank you!”
Don’t forget, your child can use their special WBD token to get £1 off any book worth more than £2.99
(E.g. WH Smiths, Waterstones)
The students of Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools have been learning songs to sign and sing in their Music lessons, at home with their families and rehearsing in assemblies for their Sign2Sing event which took place on Tuesday 11th February 2020. This was performed as a whole school which involved over 530 pupils from each school and took place in the Chantry School hall during the day. They performed ‘True Colours’ by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, Make Your Own Kind of Music’ by Paloma Faith, ‘Count on Me’ by Bruno Mars and ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ by Keane. Pupils learnt about the creator of Makaton signing, Margaret Walker, and learnt some everyday makaton signs.
Charlotte Jones, Curriculum Leader of Creative Arts at Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools said, “We think this is a terrific initiative which has taught the children a new and valuable skill as well as raising awareness of deaf issues. The behaviour of the students was impeccable and students and staff performed brilliantly on the day. The event was really emotional.”
SignHealth, which is a national charity, dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of deaf people, are behind the event.
Students at Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools raised money for SignHealth on the day by wearing non uniform day. All money raised will go towards helping SignHealth transform the lives of thousands of people living in the UK and Africa.
We thank everyone for their hard work and donations.
Our yearly Cheviot Ceilidh took place on Saturday 8th February 2019, 7.00 pm – 9:30 pm at The King Edward VI School in Morpeth. Students from KEVI, Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools Ceilidh Bands came together to perform various sets for people to dance to lead by caller, Alistair Anderson.
The students all performed brilliantly and everyone had a fabulous time. It was so lovely to see so many families and people of all ages at the event having such a fun night out.
A huge thank you to Heather Harrison for organising this and to the KEVI tech, sound and lighting team supported by Jonathan Hughes.
Just a reminder that our annual Book Fair starts straight after the holiday and will be held in the school library from Monday, February 24th to Friday, February 28th.
On Tuesday 25th, the Fair will stay open until 4:15 pm to enable those of you who collect your children from school to view the books, if you’d like to. It would be lovely to see you!
All children will have the opportunity of visiting the Fair where they can purchase from an exciting range of books and items of stationery.
Discount vouchers, which are much safer than cash and give your child 20% more book buying power at the Fair, can be purchased from this website:
https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/travelling-books/parents
On presentation of a voucher, children can choose books up to the value shown
The dedicated free helpline is 0800 212 281
60% of the total Fair takings come back to school to be spent directly on our children in various different ways, so it’s worth supporting.
Last year we achieved our highest sales yet. This year, with your help, we might do even better!
