World Book Day

12th February 2020Mrs C Allison

World Book Day will be celebrated on Thursday, February 27th!

It’s World Book Day on Thursday March 5th but Newminster will be celebrating it during Book Fair Week – on Thursday, February 27th

– and having a non-uniform day to raise funds for a wonderful charity, Book Aid International.

We’re inviting everyone to mark this special day by dressing up as a character or iconic object from literature. Children whose outfits display the most hard work, ingenuity and originality of interpretation will be eligible to choose a book prize (up to £7.99) from the Fair!

Please note that for the purpose of awarding prizes, children in a group effort will be judged as individuals.

Some of last year’s brilliant winners!

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1tSE0JntWVpV1j5Jj8LCpU4KpqOv-Wijt

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1jroI78HfKTOA5NH4gORIYcOGBGxLwIP6

https://drive.google.com/open?id=11XS0gPKAXsjBROkRaUfu9PDGUfgBsLm3

Children can dress up – and possibly win a prize – or dress down to suit their own personality.

Either way, please, please remind them to bring a contribution to help send books to children in areas of the world which have none. Children can’t learn to read without access to books and being able to read is a big step on the ladder towards dignity and self-determination.

You might be interested to know that publishers donate the books free of charge but it costs £2 to get each book to where it’s needed.

Books travel first by ship and air then complete their final journeys by whatever means are available –  truck, motorbike, donkey, camel…. and even on bullock carts!

However they get to their destinations, they are hugely valued and appreciated when they do

so…

in advance…“Thank you!”

Don’t forget, your child can use their special WBD token to get £1 off any book worth more than £2.99

  • at our Book Fair or
  • in any bookshop displaying the WBD logo on their window

 (E.g. WH Smiths, Waterstones)

Sign2Sing

11th February 2020Sarah Hall

The students of Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools have been learning songs to sign and sing in their Music lessons, at home with their families and rehearsing in assemblies for their Sign2Sing event which took place on Tuesday 11th February 2020. This was performed as a whole school which involved over 530 pupils from each school and took place in the Chantry School hall during the day. They performed ‘True Colours’ by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, Make Your Own Kind of Music’ by Paloma Faith, ‘Count on Me’ by Bruno Mars and ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ by Keane. Pupils learnt about the creator of Makaton signing, Margaret Walker, and learnt some everyday makaton signs.

Charlotte Jones, Curriculum Leader of Creative Arts at Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools said, “We think this is a terrific initiative which has taught the children a new and valuable skill as well as raising awareness of deaf issues. The behaviour of the students was impeccable and students and staff performed brilliantly on the day. The event was really emotional.”

SignHealth, which is a national charity, dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of deaf people, are behind the event.

Students at Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools raised money for SignHealth on the day by wearing non uniform day. All money raised will go towards helping SignHealth transform the lives of thousands of people living in the UK and Africa.

We thank everyone for their hard work and donations.

Three Rivers Ceilidh

11th February 2020Sarah Hall

Our yearly Cheviot Ceilidh took place on Saturday 8th February 2019, 7.00 pm – 9:30 pm at The King Edward VI School in Morpeth.  Students from KEVI, Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools Ceilidh Bands came together to perform various sets for people to dance to lead by caller, Alistair Anderson.

The students all performed brilliantly and everyone had a fabulous time. It was so lovely to see so many families and people of all ages at the event having such a fun night out.

A huge thank you to Heather Harrison for organising this and to the KEVI tech, sound and lighting team supported by Jonathan Hughes.

Newminster Book Fair 2020

10th February 2020Sarah Hall

Just a reminder that our annual Book Fair starts straight after the holiday and will be held in the school library from Monday, February 24th to Friday, February 28th.

On Tuesday 25th, the Fair will stay open until 4:15 pm to enable those of you who collect your children from school to view the books, if you’d like to.  It would be lovely to see you!

All children will have the opportunity of visiting the Fair where they can purchase from an exciting range of books and items of stationery.

Discount vouchers, which are much safer than cash and give your child 20% more book buying power at the Fair, can be purchased from this website:

https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/travelling-books/parents

On presentation of a voucher, children can choose books up to the value shown

The dedicated free helpline is 0800 212 281

60% of the total Fair takings come back to school to be spent directly on our children in various different ways, so it’s worth supporting.

Last year we achieved our highest sales yet. This year, with your help, we might do even better!
