30th November 2016L Dickinson

MASCOTThe Newminster and Chantry choir performed at Heighley Gate Garden Centre on Saturday 26th November 2016 to raise money for the Henry Dancer Days Charity.

They were wonderful and sang a repertoire of songs including some from the Christmas performance.

We received a lovely email from the charity:

“Just to let you know that you helped us raise £740 today for Henry Dancer Days.
Many, many, many thanks for all your help and support. Please would you let everyone who was involved know of this superb amount.
Once again my sincere thanks. We are indebted to you for your wonderful, willing help.”

Sign2sing have revealed their new mascot who was designed by Ryan Rong, aged 12 from Newminster Middle School. His design was turned into a mascot for SignHealth by Jellyhead Studios, based in London, who have previously made mascots for the BBC, Asda and the Rainforest Cafe.

I think you will all agree he looks incredible! Well done Ryan!

Remembrance Day choir assembly

28th November 2016L Dickinson

choirOn Thursday 10th November the choir commemorated all those who fought for us in the 1st and 2nd World Wars, as well as those soldiers still fighting in Afghanistan and Syria, by singing in assembly. The choir sung a beautiful arrangement of Josh Groban’s ‘Brave’ a song about not giving up and being brave in difficult situations. The choir sung in 2 part harmony creating a haunting and memorable performance.

Well done to all who sang! Choir rehearsals are Monday 3:30-4:30pm in the Chantry school hall for anyone who would like to join us after Christmas.

Kids’ Lit Quiz

Newminster A contesting a tie break with 8 other teams.

The NE regional heat of this national competition was a closely fought and extremely tough contest.  Each of the top five teams was separated by just half a point and every round went to a tie breaker.

With rounds on Captains, Cannibals, Cutlery, Cars, Comics and cartoons, not to mention Furniture, Hobbies, Rodents, Babies and World War 1, it was hard to predict our strengths and this cost us valuable points, as scores are doubled on the joker round.

Seriously, can you think of ten literary references to cutlery…?

Nevertheless, our teams performed magnificently and should be proud of their richly deserved scores of 71 and 68. Most teams in the contest were composed of Y8 students so we’re especially proud of our Y6 team and hope to see them in the top ten next year!

Tom, Will, Simone and Iona explaining how they were identifying the best round on which to play their joker.

Y8 Careers Conference

20th October 2016L Dickinson

Conference workwear qOn Tuesday 18th October, the Year 8 students entered the world of work at AIS connect. Students traded their uniform for smart workwear as they stepped into the shoes of a ‘conference delegate’ for the day.

The purpose of the day is to prepare our students to make informed career choices for the future. The event highlights alternative careers pathways such as apprenticeships as well as the more traditional routes into employment.

We want our CEIAG programme to support learning and the important decisions that young people make about subjects, pathways, future learning and job opportunities. At Newminster we believe in supporting the development of skills learning, skills for life and skills for work.
