Twenty Year 7 pupils have been attending the Science Big Bang Fair Club at Newminster.
The aim of this club is to encourage pupils to develop their scientific curiosity and to find solutions to problems in the same way as professional scientists do. Pupils have developed their own science projects and have each achieved a CREST Bronze Award.
On Tuesday 7 July the pupils presented their projects to judges at the North East’s regional Big Bang Fair at Northumbria University. Pupils also explored the fair’s industry stands and had the opportunity to explore careers in the STEM subjects.
Between 29 June and 3 July, 33 Year 7 pupils attended the Belgium Euro Space Tour 2015. They visited the Mini-Europe, Atomium and Oceade Wave Complex sites in Brussels, took part in a Eurospace Centre ‘Astronaut for the Day’ activity and visited Blankenberge Sea life Centre and the Coca-Cola Visitors Centre.
Pupils enjoyed experiencing an overseas residential experience and spending time with friends at Newminster and Chantry whilst on the trip. Pupils stayed at a hostel in the centre of Brussels, sharing a room with between 3 and 5 other pupils.
During their visit to the Eurospace Centre, pupils tried out various practical tasks which recreated the experiences of a trainee Astronaut. They also constructed rockets which were launched 100m into the air!
Do you own your own business?
Would you be willing to come and give our students in Year 6 a brief introduction about working in business?
The event will be on Friday 13th November.

The 5th Mini Lit Quiz, written and produced in-house, was even bigger than last year’s – there were more schools, more teams and more prizes! Thirty teams from Tyne and Wear, Teesside and Northumberland took part and, with an additional four schools pledged to join us in 2016, the contest seems set to grow.
Our Quiz is modelled on the Kids Lit Quiz (UK) with both individual and team prizes, but has five rounds instead of ten and its own unique style. Each round of ten questions follows a particular literary theme but, unlike the KLQ, there is also a Pictionary round featuring picture clues and between round elimination competitions for cash prizes.
This, the tenth year of the North East Book Awards, didn’t get off to a promising start when most of our Y7 participants discovered that the ceremony clashed with their trips to Belgium or Austria. When it became clear that only two of the five shortlisted authors would be coming, we were very downcast. However, this pair – joined by the charismatic and popular local author, Dan Smith – more than made up for the absences
with their engaging personalities and lively talks. If the intense heat took its toll of the adults, it didn’t seem to dampen the enthusiasm of our young judges.
