KEVI chosen to help train the next generation of teachers

12th October 2015L Dickinson

NationalTeachingSchoolThe King Edward VI School has been selected to become a National Teaching School.

Teaching Schools take a leading role in recruiting and training new entrants to the profession, identifying leadership potential and providing support for other schools, not least by exemplifying excellent standards of teaching.

The King Edward VI School is one of 52 schools in England to be granted teaching school status in the latest round.

Introduced in 2011, Teaching Schools are all rated as “outstanding”. They work with partner schools in an alliance to ensure high quality school-led initial teacher training and professional development opportunities for teachers at all stages of their career.

They raise standards through supporting other schools, engage in research and development, and ensure that the most talented school leaders are spotted and supported to become successful headteachers.

A taste of China

30th September 2015L Dickinson

20150813_161943Nǐ hǎo!  Wǒ hén hăo!

This summer, some of our current Year 6 pupils spent an amazing week in Surrey on a Chinese immersion trip.  They stayed at Frensham Heights school and spent the mornings learning the language and the afternoon participating in cultural activities.  Parents and friends were invited down on the final day to watch a performance showcasing what went on over the week.

“We learnt Kung Fu and Tai Chi.  The instructor showed us how some moves in Tai Chi can be used as self defence.”  Joseph Jackson

“We did 3 hours of language learning a day.  It was intense but amazing as we went from not knowing any words in Mandarin to being able to have conversations with our teachers and each other.”  Lottie Glover-Stewart

“We had a go on lots of different traditional musical instruments.  I especially liked the Chinese guitar.  We also learnt a folk song which we sang on the final performance.”  Lewis Harmer

Cafe Scientifique

30th September 2015L Dickinson

IMG_3471  Year 8 pupils have recently enjoyed taking part in workshops delivered by Newcastle University’s Medical School Graduate Ambassador team. First, a recent graduate of Biomedical Science shared his experiences of studying with pupils.

Pupils also had the chance to practice using mechanical micropipettes – one hundred times more accurate than the pipettes we use in science lessons! Then, the following week, pupils took part in a hands-on demonstration extracting DNA from strawberries. Pupils were fascinated to see just how much DNA a single strawberry contains and particularly enjoyed getting their hands messy!

More Cafe Scientifique workshops will be arranged in the coming weeks to allow pupils the opportunity to experience a range of careers in the STEM subjects.

If you are a parent/carer with a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths and would like to share your experiences with our Year 8 pupils at Cafe Scientifique please contact Mrs Urwin.
