Well done to our various teams at the end of a very busy season.

Football

Our U11 girls’ team finished with a fantastic 100% record having won all of their league games and the Sports Partnership event. They will next be playing in the Summer Games on 27th June, representing our Area against the best in the county.

Our U11 boys’ team also played some exceptional football, with only 1 defeat in the league and also getting to the County Cup semi-final. This is even more remarkable considering most of the team are in Year 5. Good luck next year!

The U11 B-team had some very difficult fixtures playing mainly against school A-teams but again as most were in Year 5 it looks very promising for next year.

The U13 girls’ team are still in action through into next term and have definitely improved as the season has gone on, playing some impressive football and demonstrating a great attitude.

The U13 boys’ team have also improved hugely as the season progressed finishing with a convincing 4-0 home win against Ponteland and finishing 3rd in the league.

Rugby

The season is still going, and we’d like to say that we have been massively impressed by all our KS3 teams this year. The girls have improved so much from last year’s introduction to contact and the boys finished the term with impressive performances in the County 7s event. The boys will finish the season with another 7s event on 9th May and the girls will finish on the beach!

House rugby – the fantastic attitude and commitment was also demonstrated in the house rugby competition this term. Particular note goes to the quality of the Year 5 and Year 7 teams and the high intensity of the Year 8.

Well done to Howard for winning this event. The overall positions are now:

1st – Dacre; 2nd – Howard; 3rd – Mitford; 4th – Collingwood.

Netball

Year 7 and 8 girls have performed well this season with a 3rd place finish in the league. Miss Simpson has been very impressed with the girls’ attitude and resilience demonstrated all season.

Year 5 have shown a fantastic commitment to training this year and performed well in a difficult Sports Partnership tournament against teams from Year 6. Many thanks go to the Year 7 girls who turned up each week to help train them.

Sports leaders

Well done to our Sports leaders who were trained and then led a Tri-Golf tournament to our Feeder School pupils. Once again their attitude and leadership skills were of a fantastic quality throughout. Next term they will be doing a tennis event.

We’d also like to say well done to our Year 8 boys’ basketball team and Year 7/8 girls’ cricket teams, who took part in Area events this term. Particular note goes to the Year 7 girls who turned up in such amazing numbers for the cricket training, we were invited to attend a bonus tournament to give everyone a chance to play.

 

Sport Update February 2019

U11s football

Boys – Our first team have had an exceptional start to the season, playing some fantastic football and earning a set of great results. Well done in particular to our Year 5’s who have strengthened this age group team.

Very well done to our boys 2nd team who won the Shield competition at this year’s School Sports Partnership event.

Girls – Our girls team have had a very strong start to the season, winning the Sports Partnership event and therefore qualifying for the Summer Games. The team also formed most of the U12s squad in the first annual National cup competition for this age. They performed exceptionally well and arguably were the better team, but unfortunately were beaten on penalties by Chantry.

U12s football

Boys – Our U12s team has looked particularly strong this year having already played some superb football with plenty more games to come. It’s fantastic to see several of these boys stepping up into the U13s team this season.

Girls – Well done to our U13s girls 2nd team (all Year 7s) who won the Shield competition at this year’s School Sports Partnership Event.

U13s football

Boys – the boys have had a steady start to the season with a mixed set of results. I have been most impressed with the attitude of the majority of the squad as they have had to play some very strong teams in the first half of the season. Stand-out players in terms of attitude and commitment: Talha H, Adonis G and Harry T.

It’s also been great to get some B and C teams games played this season to reward all pupils that regularly attend football training. The game of the season was definitely the first B-team game against Chantry, winning 3-2 and all 5 goals were top quality!

U13s rugby

Boys – the Year 7 team has had a good start to their time together. The opposition have been strong but hey have held their own and when the full squad is fit and available I’m sure they will go from strength to strength in their first season as a school contact team.

The U13s team have looked very impressive in terms of ability, determination and team play. They have dominated the RFU tournaments they have attended and looked good in the County tournament just before Christmas. With this team spirit and ability, I’m confident they will continue to play fantastic rugby.

Girls – the girls have also played some great rugby, definitely improving on their good start to contact rugby last year. Their support play and confidence has noticeably strengthened and I look forward to seeing them in action as the Rugby League starts. The RFU tournament in January definitely had them playing their best rugby so far. It was great to see the usual dominant players performing to the best of their ability but arguably even better seeing the other girls stepping up and confidently involving themselves throughout. A true full squad top performance rewarded with 5 wins out of 6.

Cross Country

Well done to our Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 runners who took part in the early county cross event at Gateshead stadium this year.

We had some exceptional individual performances including Kate K(1st), Robert W (5th), Ben H (5th), Reuben E (6th), Lola St (7th), Amelia H (8th). To put this into perspective each age group race contained over 100 athletes.

When all our athletes scores were added together, the team performances were also fantastic, including: Year 5 boys: 4th from 21; Year 6 girls: 5th of 22; Year7 boys: 4th of 11; and Year 7 girls: 2nd of 12.

The cross county continued later in the year with several pupils qualifying from the Area event to the County event. Including Kate K (3rd), Ryan D (7th) and Ben H (8th) who subsequently qualified to represent the County at the inter-Counties event. Well done all!

Sports Leaders

Our Year 8 sports leaders have been active early this year when they trained and delivered a Year 2 multi-skills festival. They were a credit to the school and received high praise form Mrs Clarke, our Sports Partnership Manager. I have also been impressed with their assistance in the house cross country event and regular helpers with the lunchtime sports clubs for the younger pupils.

House Events

Cross country – Well done to every participant in our first House event of the year with each athlete scoring points for their house. The overall team scores after the event:

Dacre – 30; Collingwood and Mitford – 17, Howard – 16.

Particular well done to individual winners: Dan S, Florry C, Reuben E, Zoe P, Ben H, Kate K, Ryan D, Sophia C.

Other Sports Partnership Events

Rowing – well done to all our participants at the annual Indoor Rowing competition at Cambois RC. Special mention goes to Kate K, Ben B and Angus B who all qualified for the North East Finals

Badminton – great performances from our U13 players. Well done to the boys who finished 3rd and the girls who won the event!

Sportshall Athletics – Our athletes performed exceptionally well at this fantastic annual event. Each athlete had to show great versatility to perform in running, throwing and jumping events. Their scores were then combined to give an overall team score. A superb set of results:

Year 5/6 – 3rd; Year 7 boys – 1st; Year 7 girls – 1st; Year 8 boys – 2nd; Year 8 girls – 1st. Well done!

Basketball – Fantastic effort from our Year 7/8 team at the event in Chantry shed. The lads survived near freezing temperatures to play some brilliant team basketball and earned a much deserved 2 wins from 3. The results were not bettered by any other team there, but the boys just missed out on the overall win on points scored.

Rugby League

The season has progressed very well with action for all our many participants in KS3.

Y7s Boys

We were the only school to take 2 teams to the Rugby League event at Kingston Park in March. The first team played extremely well, working hard together in attack and defense and finished the day unbeaten. The less experienced second team also put together some lovely rugby at times with some star performances from Sam and Adonis who have put themselves in the frame for 1st team action next season if they continue this commitment.

Y7 Girls

This team in their first year of contact rugby showed a great willingness and attitude throughout the Regional Finals tournament in April. Although they did not win the event, the team deserve much praise for their developing skills and it was obvious they played their best rugby in this last event in the rugby league season. I look forward to seeing them further develop next year.

Y8 Girls

The Regional Finals of the Rugby League event once again saw this superb team raise the trophy to be crowned North East Champions for the second year in a row. The team were unbelievable in attack and defense and barely a mistake was made in their 3 wins and 1 draw. The entire squad played their part in this fantastic accolade. The only down-side was an injury sustained by Orla, but her determination and commitment goes with the rest of the team into the National Finals!

National Finals, Leeds

Firstly and most importantly a huge ‘well done’ to this unbelievable squad of players. Despite missing a few key players (and Emma and Fran picking up injuries during the games) the full squad played their part and were magnificent at this prestigious event. Representing the North-East against the best from the rest of the country for the second year in a row, the girls got to the Semi-Final stage after recording 2 wins and a loss in the group stages. Again, repeating a fixture from last year, the girls played Castleford, one of the main areas for RL in the country. It was obvious from the start the opposition were powerful and well organised and despite our girls best efforts we were again beaten semi-finalists. I knew from the start our squad would play to their absolute best and give a great performance, but it was also noted from a couple of the other team managers how good our players were. Very well done!

Rugby Union

The KS3 girls teams again played fantastically well in the last Union event of the year. Team 1 (missing several key players) recorded a dominant 100% win record and I was also impressed with Team 2 who improved throughout the event and again played some great rugby. It was very pleasing to see the newer players to the game (including the Y7s in their first RU event) combine well in attack and defense.

The Y8 boys teams finished the season with brilliant performances at the last RFU contact tournament of the year. I once again took 2 teams to an event as I’ve been so impressed with the level of commitment and interest all season.

Team 1 were outstanding and recorded 3 wins and a draw. All of the team were magnificent with each and every one of them giving their all throughout. Well done to Chris, Ollie, Harvey, Dan, Noah, Fraser and Sam. Team 2 also played some superb rugby winning their last game in magnificent fashion. Star performances came from likely candidates, Matteo, Mackenzie and Tom, but also special mention to Hussain who played the best rugby of his season so far.

U13s football

The business end of the season has certainly provided some quality football from arguably our best football team at Newminster. Last half term ended with a National Cup Semi-Final trip to Cheshire to play Blacon High School. Although I’d like to say our team played the better football, particularly in the second half, the result was not to be and the best National Cup football run unfortunately came to an end. I must give huge credit to the entire squad who never let their heads drop and played with fantastic commitment, energy and determination throughout.

The team also had the small matter of a County Cup Final against St Mary’s. Unfortunately, like the National Cup game it was the opposition that capitalised on the early opportunities and took a 3-0 lead into half time. Chasing the game we had to alter tactics and due to a few key injuries we had to play a few players out of position. However I must give huge credit in particular to Dan W, Matty and Ollie who kept it very tidy at the back as we pushed for goals. James was always dangerous and helped himself to 2 goals and along with 1st team debut goal from Dan W we kept the score respectable at 5-3. Well done to St Mary’s who were an impressive team with strength and skill all over the pitch.

The league also came to an end with arguably my (and the team’s) most enjoyable match of the season against then league leaders St Benet Biscops. The players decided they wanted to thoroughly enjoy this game and give everyone a go at playing in a totally different position. So James and Ollie devised a team set-up (including James in goal, our strikers as centre-backs and defenders and Chris up front). It came as a surprise to most to see us take the lead but as the game wore on I realised our quality squad could literally play well anywhere on the pitch. Following a well taken equaliser, one of our players of the season and captain on the night, Ollie, scored a fantastic volley to win the game 2-1. Well done to all!

Other sport

I would also like to send huge congratulations to a couple of extremely talented individuals that have been taking part in National competitions outside of school:
Clara Scott, trampoline competition- Clara was down to the last nine from hundreds of participants in the U11 girls intermediate category after placing 3rd at the North Zonals in Huddersfield.

As expected the competition was tough with many excellent competitors all deserving to be there. Clara did some beautiful routines in warm up prior to competing. She competed two lovely routines and was just pipped to the podium finishing in a very respectful 4th place for her school. Clara represented her school impeccably!

James Ash, Team Gymnastics – James got through to the Team Gym British Championships and his team came 4th which is a truly amazing achievement!

Spring 2 Update

U13s football

The boys have now added a County Cup Final place to the season after a 1-0 victory over Ponteland in the Semi. The team dominated the first half with another quality goal from James and a very solid performance from our defensive unit. The second half saw Ponteland grow into the game but we only allowed half chances until a frantic last few minutes. Their goalkeeper decided to park himself in our half of the pitch but neither side could capitalise on this and so the game ended 1-0. Well done boys!

Special mention goes to James and Tom who have represented our Area team this season and have also had a fantastic run in their equivalent National Cup. James scored in their 6-0 demolition of Tameside in the Quarter-Final. Tom then scored a ‘Worldie’ in the Semi-Final against Liverpool to take the game into extra-time at 2-2. Unfortunately the boys got beat on penalties but they can hold their heads high, as they are a phenomenal team with important games still to come.

Girls Rugby League

The rugby season has now started for the girls, with a tournament for each of our Y7 and Y8 teams.

The Y8s started where they left off last year with dominant performances from both squads and have set themselves up nicely for the next round of fixtures in March. Special mention goes to the new girls in the teams, Olivia, Chloe, Ami, Daisy, Louisa, Bronwen, Bella, Leah and Emily.This not only means we now have 2 large squads to enter into these competitions but they definitely had a positive impact on their teams’ performances.

In the second round of fixtures I tinkered with the teams to put all the more dominant players on one team to give the other girls chance to get much more involved in their squad. The stronger squad had a steady start in the first 5 minutes of their first game but then turned on the style and went through the gears to win all their games. I was also very pleased with the other team who recorded a win and 2 loses but more importantly the games let these these girls shine and more opportunities on the ball. This of course will now give me a huge dilemma as to who to pick for the Regional Finals in April they have now qualified for!

The Y7s also had a very good start to the season. Considering this was their first lot of games ever, there were some very strong performances from many of the team which led to a very pleasing set of results of three wins, one draw and one loss.

The second round of games also showed improvements as the tournament went on. After an initial loss to Seaton Sluice the team performances and organisation improved hugely and deservedly won the final 2 games.

The competition at this age has been very close and I’m pleased to say with these results the girls have also qualified for the Regional Finals in April.

Rugby Match Report March 2018

The rugby season has now come to a close with the annual 7 fixtures taking place for the U12 and U13 teams.

On Thursday 22 March the U13 boys’ team travelled to Bede Academy in the County Cup. Playing under some new and innovative rules the players adapted well to the conditions and played some intelligent rugby.

In the group we played Bede Academy and Dame Allan’s coming out comfortable winners in both games and progressing into the main cup draw. In the main cup we were paired with Newcastle School for Boys (NSB) and RGS, both private schools who take their 7s rugby very seriously.

In our first game, against NSB, the boys played some unbelievable rugby and comfortably won 35-5. In our final game we knew we had to beat RGS to win the competition and despite a fantastic start the boys were beaten by a better team on the day.

To finish runners up and beating two out of the three private schools was a remarkable achievement by all the players.

On Friday 23 it was then the U12 turn to try out 7s for the first time. They also had to use the new rules and despite having extremely limited time they adapted well and gave 100%. After a solid start against St Thomas More, Gateshead in which we won 27-12 we then outclassed and outplayed Bede Academy to win 41-5. Our final group game was against RGS who once again proved too skilful and despite a spirited performance we lost the game.

Coming second in the group we entered the runners up play-off where we lost to Dame Allan’s to finish the tournament 4th overall.

With very little time together and no school rugby this year I was extremely proud of the effort from all the players. There was some exceptional tackling and rucking which I am excited to see develop next season.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players who have trained and played this year. I would also like to thank the Head Teachers of both Newminster and Chantry for their support and allowing the teams out of school. Finally I would like to thank the PE staff from both schools for their support this season.

U13s girls cricket

Well done to our Y7/8 girls team who won the Lady Taverners Area Cricket title at Ashington Leisure Centre. The team looked superb in the early games and set up a final against Ponteland who always produce a good team in this competition. Ponteland batted first and set the target for our girls. We batted very intelligently; steadily and efficiently progressing towards their score, until it came down to the last 2 balls, in which we needed 3 runs to win. Eadie and Ruby were in bat and after a great hit and indecision in the field the girls took advantage and got the runs with only one ball to spare. A fantastic result.

Unfortunately the girls couldn’t quite match this result at the County Finals but it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of this magnificent team.

Indoor Rowing

Well done to Lucy, Danny and Harry who went to the Regional Finals of this event competing against the best rowers in the North of England. They performed with immense strength and determination and can now officially class themselves as being within the top 10 rowers in the North of England.

Indoor Athletics

Well done to our girls Y7 team who achieved the Bronze medal in the County Finals event at Morpeth Leisure Centre. The girls performed very well against very strong opposition.

Sport Relief 18

Many thanks to all our guests and pupils for our involvement in this week of activities. As well as the many competitive school competitions; we have also had some football fitness sessions delivered by Mrs Stewart and Mrs Cromar, golf taster sessions delivered by Rookie Sports and the ‘Football cage’ from the Mustard Tree Trust.

Our sponsored walk was the main event on Wednesday and was hugely successful. We raised ÂŁ419.75 and in combination with Chantry pupils we covered a cumulative distance of 4642.2km – which is the distance from Morpeth to Nigeria in Western Africa!!

Spring Sporting Events Update

Football – U13s

Another stunning half term for our Y8 football teams!

The boys (with Lucy and Orla!) have now progressed into the National Cup Quarter Finals.

Round 4 saw a tremendous 8-0 home victory over Central Academy, Carlisle. Goals came from Roan (2), Ollie, Giorgio, Joe and most notably a goal for each of the McConnell triplets, a magnificent achievement.

Round 5 took us to Thirsk School and a game against a physically strong team who passed the ball very well. The first half was fairly even with Tom getting the only goal from a great cross from Ollie. Then Newminster once again stepped it up in the second half and 2 goals each from Josh G and James sealed an impressive win.
The team were also involved in the County Cup Quarter-Final against Dr Thomlinson’s from Rothbury. Rothbury set up very defensively playing most of the game with 10 players behind the ball which proved difficult for us to break through but one fantastic quick passing move was finished by Roan, ex-Rothbury pupil and co-captain for the game. Although Rothbury couldn’t put together any meaningful attacks, we couldn’t score either so the game finished 1-0. On to the semis!

I would also like to congratulate Tom and James for being part of the East Northumberland team who have also progressed to the Inter Association National Cup Quarter Finals.

Cross Country

11 of our pupils had qualified to represent our area at the County Cross Country in mid-January and I’d like to congratulate the 9 who ran in a very injury and illness hit time! Well done.

 

Sportshall athletics at Chantry

We took a full set of teams to this annual event and once again performed very well both individually and in the team events. We had a good set of results, including 3rd for Y7 boys, 2nd place for our Y6, Y8 boys and Y8 girls and a magnificent first place for our Y7 girls who will now represent the area in March. I’d also like to mention the Y8 boys relay team of James, Dan, Ollie C and Ollie B who ran the race of the day winning it by almost a full lap.

 

Badminton

On the 18th January we took 3 teams from Y8 to the Sports Partnership Badminton tournament at Chantry. The teams did well against some very strong opposition and all 3 teams finished 2nd in their respective groups. Special mention goes to fantastic individual performances from Ellen and Ollie.

 

Basketball

I’d like to congratulate our basketball squad who took part in the annual Sports Partnership event at Chantry. The full squad played with fantastic determination and teamwork and took well earned victories over Chantry and Rothbury. The game against Ponteland was always going to be difficult (and proved to be the tournament winning decider) but our lads rose to the challenge and played with great speed and athleticism, noted by their manager. Unfortunately Ponteland put away more of their shots than us so took the victory. Definitely the game of the tournament. Well done to our full squad: Ollie, Chris, Euan, Caelan, Evan L and B, Jacob, Tom, Dan and Finlay.

Winter Update

U13s Football

A very successful half term for our fantastic U13s teams. The boys team started with a very difficult County Cup away tie at St Thomas More. The game was probably one of the best of the season and after a very tight first half (and a late free kick superbly executed by James McConnell) Newminster stepped up a gear in the second half and ran out 4-2 winners. Other goals were scored by Louie Gourlay (2) and a Josh Grenfell header.

Following this was a double header against Chantry in the National Cup and the County Cup. The first game was dominated by Newminster, with Chantry missing their star players from Y7. Final score, 3-0, with 2 from James and another strikers finish from Joe Lennox.
The second game was a much closer event with both teams at full strength. Newminster performed exceptionally well in the first half with goals from James, and Harvey Gillie’s first of the season. The first goal in the second half was always going to dictate the rest of the game and with Chantry scoring it, it made the game much more exciting but Newminster’s organised defense and hard work by the midfield kept the score to 2-1. On to the Quarter-Finals!
The U13s girls team have stormed through this half-term with two huge National Cup wins. An 8-0 away win at Kingsmeadow school from Gateshead, with goals from our usual goalscorers Orla Callaghan and Lucy McConnell (5), and also Lola Jackson and Ruby Gerrard weighing in with one each. This was followed by an 8-1 home victory against Easington Academy, this time Lucy getting just the 6 and 2 from Orla!

The Girls U13 Netball Team

The Girls U13 Netball Teamhave had an outstanding start in the South East Northumberland Netball League. They have played 5 matches, winning four of their games and losing only one of their games, by only one point!

U13s girls rugby

Another successful event with dominant performances from both our teams at a very cold evening tournament at NCEA. Our usual star performers did extremely well, but it was also very enjoyable to see them all playing as a team, making sure all the girls were involved in all aspects of the game.

House events

The 2017/8 house events got off to a great start with the Cross Country event in which all pupils were expected to run and gain points for their house. Well done to everyone who took part! Special mention goes to individual winners – Reuben Elliott, Zoe Parker, Ben Hewitt, Kate Kennedy, Dylan Walker, Sophia Cunningham, James McConnell and Orla Callaghan.The best of these finishes was definitely the Y8 boys, in which there was only hair’s breadth between James, Tom Wales and Matty Walton.
This was closely followed by the house football, netball and handball competitions. Despite the freezing cold and the fire alarm almost putting a halt to proceedings, the events took place and again I’d like to congratulate everyone that took part for their house.
The scores so far: Collingwood – 45; Dacre – 59; Howard – 46; Mitford – 50.

Area Cross Country

The Area Cross Country took place at Queen Elizabeth II park, Ashington – we took the top 6 boy and girl athletes from Y7 and Y8 to this event. A fantastic effort from all our athletes (listed below) on this rare sunny day and particular congratulations to the following for finishing in the top 16 and qualifying for the County event on 18th January: Sophia (1st), Sophie (2nd), Ruby, Ava, Erin, Izzie; Dylan (5th – running most of it with one shoe!) Harry, Orla (4th), Fran and Matty. Special mention to the Y8s who were competing against Y9s. In terms of overall team finishes I’d like to say very well done to all our performers, including the Newminster Y7 girls team who were 1st and the Y8 girls team were top of the middle school teams.

Sports Partnership Volleyball tournament at Chantry

Well done to all our performers at this event. The games were particularly exciting and as the tournament went on the rallies got better and better. It was was pleasing to see so many Newminster pupils take part, and special mention goes to our Y8 boys 1st team that only just missed out on a place at the summer games with a narrow defeat to eventual winners Ponteland.

Football U13

The team have got off to a good start to the season with league wins over JCSC Amble and Rothbury. Unfortunately with key players missing we were beaten by Chantry, however, I was very impressed with the positive contributions of Orla Callaghan and goal scorer Lucy McConnell. The National Cup got off to a very good start with a comprehensive win over Ovingham Middle.

Further league and cup fixtures will be played next half term.

 

U12 Boys County Cup Football V NSB 9/10/17

Newminster U12 boys footballers put in a spirited performance to beat NSB 3-2 after extra time to move through to round 2 of the County Cup. An extra time winner by Joel Gallagher saw Newminster though to the next round where they will face Ponteland.

 

U11 Football

A team – The team have played three games so far this year and have kept their unbeaten record intact with two wins and one draw. The attitude of the players has been very good so far and they have been a credit to the school.

B Team – The team has attended two league tournament nights so far that have been played with fantastic spirit and determination. All of the players have been a credit to the school.

Well done to the following pupils for all getting into the Area teams for this year. Good luck to them this season!: Tom Wales, James McConnell, Matty Walton, Sannad Mensli, Charlie Lowes, Mark Wales, Louie Wilson and Ben Hewitt.

 

Rugby League

We took 2 teams to their first event of the year at a very cold and windy Seaton Sluice Middle School. Our second team had a very tough introduction to the game playing against a confident Churchill A-team, but showed a decent level of improvement in their second game against another A-team. With a bit more training I’m sure the lads will continue to improve and get a confidence boost playing against other B-teams. Well done in particular to Sam Mundell and Jacob Woods who showed no fear in attack and defense.

Our first team literally hit the ground running with 3 wins out of 3 and no tries conceded, showing great individual and team play in attack and ferocious defending to keep all opposition out. Great credit goes to the entire team: Harry T, Bo and Br, Sannad, James, Dan C and W, Charlie, Fergus, Cameron and captain Ollie!

Rugy Union Boys

Excellent start to the Cheviot this term seeing the largest numbers on record training and playing – fantastic!

We have played a number of matches with the U13 team beating Mowden Hall, Dr Tomlinson’s, Berwick and Bede. We have also played both A & B games against NSB, a brilliant afternoon to see so many players on the pitch.

Our Year 7 team are yet to play but there are fixtures after half term.

Furthermore we have played our first ever Year 6 full contact games. We put out an A & B team v NSB and had huge wins for both teams so the future is bright for rugby at the Cheviot.

Rugby Union Girls

The season began very well for our extremely strong girls’ teams, starting where they left off last year with dominating performances over Ponteland Middle and Richard Coates. The only really competitive match was once again when the two teams played against each other in which the girls demonstrated fantastic running, passing and tackling!

 

Athletics

The cross country season started early again this year with a county event at Gateshead stadium. All athletes took part with brilliant determination and included the following results:

World Marathon Challenge 2017

This year the challenge started on the week commencing 4th October and unlike all previous years runs for the entire academic year. 26 pupils from Newminster joined athletes from Chantry and KEVI to form 2 separate teams. Each athlete ran a 200m leg of the relay run, which was repeated until a marathon distance was complete. The aim is to achieve a time as near as possible to the Men’s Marathon world record time. The 2 teams are currently sitting 1st and 2nd in England and 5th and 6th in the world with times of 2:03:44 and 2:03:47. An unbelievable achievement!

 

Sports Leaders

Our Y8s have been busy already this year with assisting at a Y2 multi-skills festival, the U11s and U13s girls football tournament and the U11s tag rugby tournament. They were a fantastic credit to the school with staff from the Sports Partnership signing their praises!

9.6 – KS2 Cricket tournament at Ponteland

A young group of players headed to Ponteland for the KS2 cricket tournament with only a few training sessions under their belts.
They quickly picked up the rules of the game but found it difficult as they were mainly made up of year 5s, competing against some experienced Year 6 teams. This will stand them in good stead for next year though.
I think that they all developed throughout the day and really enjoyed the experience. I hope they take the lessons learned today and head back next year all the better for the experience.

15.6 – Area athletics event at Jarrow

Well done to all our athletes that took part in this fantastic event at Monkton Stadium. It was attended by the most amount of schools this year and as a school we potentially had the highest number of qualifiers for the County event on the 24th. The weather was perfect for all of our runners, jumpers and throwers form Y6, 7 and 8. A superb effort by all and congratulations to all County qualifiers:

20.6 / 6.7 – School Sports Days

On the 20th June we had our Field Events, and the main Track Events Sports Day took place on the 6th July. All our pupils were invited to take part over these two days. It was fantastic to watch the effort and determination that went into all competitions. Well done to Dacre house who won both the Track and Field events.

26.6 – Girls beach rugby event at Tynemouth

The girls’ unbelievable rugby season finally came to an end with this fun festival on the beach. 13.7 – Y8 Sports’ Celebration Evening at Ponteland

This was the final chance for our ‘elite’ Y8s to represent the school in a Inter-school event against our local schools. They all played basketball, football, handball and rounders. 17.7 – Final house events of the year – Cricket, Rounders and Benchball

This will be a fantastic way to end the year of sports with our last Inter-House event. Full credit goes to all pupils who have represented their house so far this year and good luck to everyone for this.

Trampolining

Clara Scott (Y5) started her competitive trampolining this year with 2 rounds each of 2 compulsory routines. Her scores qualified her to represent the region at the NDP (National Development Plan) Regional team and NDP Semi-Final at Birmingham. In this event Clara finished 1st in the region and in the top 8 in the country which meant she then qualified for the NDP National Final at Telford. Clara competed at the Telford International Centre and finished 1st in the country! Therefore she is now ranked number 1 in the country at NDP for her age group. An unbelievable achievement for Clara. We wish her continued success in the future and hope to hear of her further magnificent feats.

U13 Newminster Girls Netball Team

The U13 Newminster Girls Netball Team displayed great skill and teamwork throughout the season to achieve a 4th place finish in a highly competitive league of 12 Northumberland teams. Having played 11 fixtures, the girls won 7, drew 1 and only lost during 3 very close matches. The girls have continued to develop their netball ability and knowledge throughout the season meaning that all of the team had an opportunity to trial for the county, Laura Stevenson, Freya Lawrence and Maia Smith all being successful, well done. I’m sure all the girls involved in the team and the wider squad will continue to enjoy and achieve in their netball ventures. We wish them much success in the future.

It was great to get our KS2 team a run out before the season draws to a close. After struggling to put a team together for most of the season we have at last got a group of girls very keen to play and throughout this mini-tournament they played in a very determined manner. 26.4 – Y7 National cup v Bury School for Boys
Our Newminster U12’s footballers fantastic run in the ESFA National cup unfortunately came to an end this half term in a extremely close defeat to Bury School for Boys. Newminster took the lead through James McConnell midway through the first half and seemed destined to be on their way to the quarter finals until Bury equalised midway through the second half. It was then a freak goal from Bury which looped into the net as we seemed to be heading for extra time that ended this years cup run for Newminster. Despite the defeat the team were still in buoyant mood, deservedly proud of their success this year. Very well done to all involved for their superb attitude throughout the season and we look forward to more success when they become our U13 team next year.

27.4 – U13s football v Rothbury:

U13s football: I put together a large experimental squad for this friendly involving Y7 and Y8 boys, led and organised magnificently by captains Ben Loknes and James Allan. The lads played well in the first half, creating several goal scoring chances and looking solid at the back. However it was Rothbury that struck first with a goal coming form pressurising our defense. Looking like we were heading to half time a goal down the team stepped up a gear and forced the equaliser courtesy of Roan’s quick thinking after we struck the crossbar. I made several changes at half-time but the lads adapted to the game very quickly and it didn’t take long for Joe Lennox to score a debut goal for the U13s. The game continued in a very exciting manner with the ball quickly moving from end to end. However due to some unbelievable saves from Chris in goal and hard work from both defenses neither side could score again, despite an extremely frantic last 5 minutes! Special mention goes to Ben Loknes and James for their hard work on and off the pitch and a very positive debut performance from Charlie.

2.5 – Y7 girls’ National Rugby League Finals in Warrington:

Over the course of the year, the Y7 girls have played in the Champion Schools Rugby League Regional competition. Having recently won the regional final at Kingston Park, this qualified the girls for the National Champion Schools finals in Warrington where the top 8 teams for the regional qualifiers from around the country would gather. Teams played each other, in two pools of 4, for the right to qualify for the National Final to be held at Wembley in August before the Challenge Cup final.

It was a fantastic achievement for the girls to have got this far; especially as some of them had never played rugby or, more importantly, contact rugby of any sort up to this point. So, on a sunny May day, they headed down to the heartland of rugby league to test themselves against the best in the country. In our pool on the day were Longdean from London, Castleford Academy from Yorkshire and Deanery from the North West.

In our first game we played Deanery who have been brought up on rugby league and who fancied themselves to win the tournament. The girls started a little slowly to begin with but soon grew into the match and surprised the opposition winning 12-8.

We then had a short break which allowed us to watch our other two opposition teams battle it out. Castleford looked the team to beat and you could clearly see that they knew how to play rugby league.

We faced them next and it was an incredibly tight affair, much to the surprise of the rugby league locals including the referee. The girls fought really hard and were in it right to the end, but in those short 11 minute games there is no time to come back. Castleford scored on the final whistle to win 12-8, much to their relief!

We backed up straight away in our next game knowing to qualify we needed to win. The girls proceeded to put on a fantastic display of running rugby; cutting our opposition to bits with pace, power and skill. The final score finished 24-12 to Newminster.

This set up a tense final pool game with us needing Castleford to win, or draw, or lose by less that two tries to see us through to the semi finals. Deanery proceeded to jump into a two try lead! Suddenly Castleford had a very vocal support group dressed in our colours! This seems to spur them on and they recovered to win, putting us through to the semi finals as runners up. We would face the top seed from the other pool, Malet Lambert School.

The girls had done so well to get to this point and were excited to be 11 minutes from Wembley. The game started well with all the girls fired up, this led to a few uncharacteristic errors on their part on offence. On defence however they stopped Malet Lambert again and again. In rugby league it is almost impossible to stop sustained pressure forever and the opposition finally squeezed over. This seemed to spark the girls attack with a score right from the restart. Malet Lambert came right back at them to score too. This next passage required the girls to dig deep and believe, with time now against them. They worked their way up the field with Lucy M squeezing over right on the hooter, 2-2. The referee then had to go and check what the ruling was. He came back to say it goes to golden point….the first team to score! As we had received the kick off at the start of the game, we kicked possession to them. Pressure! They worked their way up the field and managed to find some space down the right hand side. All the girls worked back tirelessly but couldn’t quite stop the opposite scoring. Heart breaking – it could have gone either way.

The girls were so disappointed but they did so amazingly well to get as far as they did. Not many people can stay they are part of a team that is in the top 4 in the country at their age group. Mr Dick and myself are so proud of them. Long may their success continue and I hope they look back and reflect on this as a great experience. The girls will have learnt so much about themselves from this; I look forward to seeing them develop their talents further.

Finally, a note to the wider squad. They were such a big part of getting the team to this point and continue to be a big part of the team. The disappointment they showed in not playing showed just how much they cared about the team and the game. On the day they were a credit to themselves, supporting the team and living every moment of the tournament with them; as they rightly should. There will be many more opportunities to play and they will definitely be involved in these if the attitude they displayed over this tournament is anything to go by. A fantastic achievement by all – well done!

3.5 – U13s football v Seaton Sluice (away):

Another fantastic performance from our boys. I decided to change formation to use wing-backs and I was very impressed at how the entire team took to this system so quickly. The team stormed into a 4-0 lead before half-time with a brace from James Mc showing a superb turn of pace and awareness of getting into the right place at the right time. Will and Ben L also helped themselves to a goal each involving great team play. At half-time I made wholesale changes then continued to make further experimental changes throughout the half to see how the boys coped. After only two minutes in a new forward role for Olly he showed great composure to place the ball into to the top corner. Seaton Sluice rallied back to score two late goals but the game was never in doubt. Well done lads, final score 5-2.Squad:

3.5 – Y7 Girls’ National Cup at home versus Dyke House

The girls played in the last 16 of the National Cup at home against a travelling Dykehouse Academy, Hartlepool. The Newminster girls went on to win 8-2 with Lucy McConnell banging in 6 goals! The other goal scorers were Orla Callaghan and Francesca Takher. This win meant the girls were now through to the quarter finals and face a long travel to Hull.

9.5 – U13 Girls County Cup Final v Valley Gardens

The girls County Cup run came down to this final against a much stronger Valley Gardens team than they had played earlier in the season. The opposition were overall a much bigger and stronger team than ours as they were mainly Y8s and ours were mainly Y7s. The girls new they had to play particularly well to match this team. However with the exceptional talent we have in our squad, the game remained very tight throughout. Both teams created good chances but with two very good defenses it didn’t look like it was going to be a high scoring game. It didn’t look like anything was going to get past Alysia in goal but late in the half Valley scored a deflected goal. With the score 1-0 at half-time we knew we had to dig deep in the second half to get back in the game. It didn’t take long as good work from Lucy and Orlaled to a shot which bounced off the post and Ellie was first to react, slotting in the equaliser. The rest of the game saw us battle for our lives as their superior size started to show. With unbelievable effort, determination and ability we kept Valley out as they pressed for a winner but the score remained 1-1 right through the rest of the game and extra-time.
The girls looked like they couldn’t give any more and those willing to take a penalty were few in number! However I knew we were in with a good chance with Alysia in goal (and willing to take a penalty!). Fran was first to step up and very neatly placed the ball into the net. Valley replied immediately. Eadie then smashed the ball down the middle hoping the keeper would dive to one side but unfortunately she stayed firm and saved it. However, the disappointment was short lived as Alysia returned the favour and saved well. Fresh from that moment, Alysia then smashed the ball into the goal for her penalty, but couldn’t deny Valley’s third. Now that we were at the business end of the shootout, Lucy stepped up and again finished well, as did Valley. Orla took our fifth penalty despite being extremely nervous before but put it away very well. Alyisa was then back in the lime-light knowing if she saved their penalty it would be game over. And so it was as she saved well, sending the team and all our support into delirium as the girls became County Champions. A deserved accolade for this fantastic group of girls.

15.5 – Sky Try Rugby League festival at St James Park

For the 3rd year this very prestigious event was held at St James’ Park and I had great pleasure in taking all our Y7s who have been part of the Sky Try Rugby League programme this year. Despite the pouring rain the 2 girls teams enjoyed a very successful morning with the only defeat being when our teams played each other. The girls continued to show how talented (and strong!) they are with superb team play, tackling and quick attacks. Not to mention the perfect conditions for sliding try scores!
The 2 boys teams took to the pitch after lunch (and after the rain stopped) and demonstrated they too could play with fantastic determination and commitment. Team A recorded a 100% win record, and Team B definitely made good progress throughout the afternoon including a very convincing win against a very physical team from Redhouse School.
The day was made even better when the pupils were joined by some superstars from the top Rugby League teams in the country. Well done Eadie for putting a big tackle into one of them!

16.5  – Y7 girls National Cup Quarter-Final away at St Mary’s Sports College, Hull.

The girls were fresh from their County Cup win (and rugby the day before!) and traveled the long journey to Hull. We arrived at the fantastic sports college and at first some of the girls were a little over-awed with the very impressive facilities. We also discovered before the game the team had a good history in this competition so we knew it was going to be a big step up from previous rounds. I also got the impression they were very much expecting a win. However, Lucy kept us calm with her now famous observation ‘All the gear…no idea’.
Although St Mary’s definitely proved to have some idea it was Newminster who dominated early play and it didn’t take long for Orla to power home a fine goal after great pressure from our midfield. Lucy, who looked very sharp and dangerous all game then quickly made it two after a great through ball allowed her to race in on goal. Orla added another goal before half-time and the game was looking very one sided. However, St Mary’s scored a good goal to keep their interest alive just before half-time. Going into the second half the girls knew the next goal was going to be vital and Lucy obliged with not one but two well taken goals. St Mary’s hit back with two of their own to keep the game interesting. In a very open game the result was made complete after further superb midfield play from our girls led to a strong shot which was only kept out by a defenders hand and the referee had no choice but to award a penalty. Orla’s penalty nerves from the Cup Final were obviously now vanquished and she stepped up to complete her hat-trick and end the game 6-3.
At the start of this competition there was 174 teams entered and the girls from Newminster Middle School are now in the final four. We would like to wish the girls all the luck in the world and want them to know that we are extremely proud of each and every one of them. Good luck girls, let’s do this!!

They were all in good spirits and the weather was dry and warm. Perfect for sevens rugby.
Each team performed well in their competitions and enjoyed the day.
It has been a great year for girls rugby at Newminster and this was a nice way to finish the contact Rugby Union for all the girls that have put so much into playing for the school this year.

25.5 – U13s Cricket tournament at Longhirst – ID

Well done to our 2 boys’ teams and 1 girls’ team who took part in this U13s event. Despite having a full squad of y7s playing against Y8s our pupils performed superbly well, showing great determination and ability.
The girls had a tough first game (in their first grass tournament) and certainly took the loss as a vital learning experience. The second game was much closer, and with a bit more experience of this style tournament they would definitely have won the game, loosing out by 2 only runs! The 3rd game was when it all came together and having learned quickly how to play, they put Chantry into bat first and quickly surpassed their score with overs to spare.
Our boys A team stormed into the Semi-Finals with a 100% win record in the group stages. The B-team had a difficult opening game but then picked themselves up quickly to record two victories from two games, inspired in the knowledge that these results meant they would play our A team in the Semi. The game was great to watch with both teams showing fantastic commitment to gain runs and wickets. The victors were our A team who went on to play Chantry A in the Final. We batted first and gained a very healthy score including several well hit boundary shots from Chris and Harvey. Chantry therefore knew the score they needed to beat and set about chipping away at it throughout their innings. Although we took a few wickets and kept the score sensible we couldn’t quite make it to the end and lost in the penultimate over. A fantastic achievement considering we were Y7s playing against Y8s. Well done to all!

2.3 – U13s Rugby tournament

The boys headed to the NSB 7’s waterfall competition with Chantry. It was the boys first experience of 7’s rugby this year and with county tournaments coming up later in the term, it was a good opportunity for them to develop their skills.

At the tournament the boys took a while to get used to amount of space that they had to play with and how that would effect how they attacked and defended. When they started to adapt and use the space in attack we were able to witness some great attacking rugby. However, from a defensive stand point we still have a lot to work on. But I hope the boys can take the experience gained here through to their next tournaments.

3.3 – Y7/8 girls cricket tournament at Ashington

Well done to our ever-reliable Y7 girls who took part in this Y8 cricket tournament. Our first ever game was always going to be tough against a strong Y8 team from Ponteland, and so it proved to be with their girls dominating the batting and bowling. However the game proved to be a vital learning experience which we took into the second game against the Y8s from Chantry. We batted first and scored a very respectable 126 which Chantry had to match. Our bowling and fielding skills were definitely up to the test and kept Chantry’s score to 96. The third game was much closer against Richard Coates but again won, 91 to 85. This booked our place in the final where we faced Ponteland once again. Unfortunately Ponteland ran out winners but in a much closer game than the first. Our girls can take a lot of credit from the tournament, making huge improvements throughout and knowing they were Y7s against Y8s teams. I’m sure they’ll come back even stronger next year.

3.3 – Y7/8 Sportshall Athletics at Morpeth

Our Y7 boys’ and Y8 boys’ teams had both qualified earlier this year for this Area tournament. Despite a few injury scares the full teams were up for this and they looked strong in the opening events. It’s always very difficult to predict the final results as the tournament draws on but it looked like the Y7s were heading for 3rd/4th place whereas the Y8s seemed to be winning most of their events. The final results were then a mix of emotions as the Y7s achieved 3rd place which was as good as they thought they would get, but the Y8s were bitterly disappointed with only 2nd place as it did seem they had won most of the events throughout the full session. However, huge praise must go to all competitors for their determination and commitment, especially those who were carrying injuries or had to cope with last minute changes to the programme!

7.3 – Regional Indoor Rowing tournament at Durham

Lucy McConnell, Eadie Barkat and Rory Dwyer took part in this event which involved the best Indoor Rowers in the North East of England. Just to get to this level took a phenomenal effort so huge congratulations go to them all, especially to Rory who despite being very ill insisted on still taking part.

9.3 – Y7 Rugby League tournament

The girls came to the tournament with an unbeaten record from the previous rounds but were missing some girls, who were away skiing. The girls felt that this may effect their chances in the tournament, so were nervous before the start. However, when the games started they played fantastically as a team and really worked hard for each other. It was great to see them grow in confidence over the games. By the end there was even a bit of complacency creeping in, as they won all their games comfortably to qualify for the regional round. Congratulations girls! I look forward to taking you to the regional round of the competition and seeing how you compete at that higher level. 

14.3 – Y7/8 girls Rugby Union tournament at Morpeth

It was with great pleasure that I took 4 teams to this event. Just to have that huge level of interest and commitment is a massive credit to the school. We had 2 Y7 teams and 2 Y8 teams. Our 2 Y7 teams played exceptionally well against a mixed Y7/8 team from St Benet Biscop’s (and against each other!). We then organised a final game for one of our Y7 teams against a Y8 team from Ponteland, which they also won. Well done!

The 2 Y8 teams also played extremely well: including great running with the ball; passing; and huge tackles flying in throughout every match. Well done in particular to our Y8 1st team who beat the first teams from Coates, Chantry and Ponteland. Their last game against Ponteland was played at a very high standard, in which we raised our game to the best level I have seen these girls play.

Further rugby is still to come for all of our girls this season.

16.3 – Y7/8 girls football (County Cup) against St Thomas More

A fantastic effort from our U13s team who went into this cup Quarter-Final game without 2 key players. After only a few minutes of the game we could see it was going to be a tough game with the opposition being both physically strong and with a few very talented players. So it proved to be when then broke quickly and took the lead. Our girls then settled into the game matching them for strength but unable to create many goal-scoring chances. The second half brought very poor weather conditions but also better football from Newminster. The game became more frantic with chances at either end, but it was Newminster who took theirs, firstly with a goal from Ellie Dandie and then a great passage of play from Newminster as they played in Lucy who used her strength and skill to turn her defender and curl the ball delightfully past the keeper. The game was destined to end in a very tense manner as Thomas More pushed for an equaliser but fantastic defending, particularly from Eadie and Ruby and saves from Alysia kept them out. A fantastic effort from the entire squad who all played a vital part in this victory.

Final score 2-1 to Newminster, who now play Ponteland in the Semi-Final.

20.3 – U11s B-team football league

A few debuts were handed out to those who have worked hard during training recently. The team started strongly and comfortably beat Chantry 3-1. A tap-in from Elliot G, followed by a free-kick smashed in by Joel G and the victory sealed by Joe D. The whole team worked extremely hard for the next two games and were unlucky not to come away with another win against Morpeth Road. Overall, the attitude of the team was very good and all players were a credit to the school.

21.3 – Sports Partnership Handball tournament at Ponteland

Huge credit to both teams who showed fantastic team spirit, attitude and ability during the full event. Both teams had a mixed set of results and what I was most impressed with was despite the score, they played with the same determination throughout each game. Both squads rotated their players well, giving everyone the chance to show their skills.

Both teams started strongly with good victories against respective Rothbury teams. Then Team 1 faced defeat to Ponteland and Coates, which they treated as a good learning experience going into their last game against a very strong Chantry team. In this short space of time you could see the improvements and they worked especially hard in defense keeping Chantry out and catching them time and again on the counter attack, final score: 2-0 Newminster.

Team 2 had a matching set of results with 2 wins and 2 defeats. Their other victory was a very convincing demolition of Ponteland. Special mention goes to the Y8 boys: Cameron, Ben S, Charlie L and Charlie H

27.3 – U13s league football v Meadowdale (home)

A great team performance against a very strong Meadowdale team.

Some of the boys had psyched themselves out of this game before it kicked off, knowing the opposition had some very talented players, but the first 10 minutes proved we were definitely up for the challenge and started on the front foot. The boys looked solid at the back and pressed high up the pitch not allowing Meadowdale to have time on the ball. This was rewarded when James and Will pressured the keeper into a mistake, playing the ball straight to Will’s feet to finish coolly into the bottom corner. More good work in midfield released Ben M down the right, who played a perfect cross for James to slot away the second. Confident in the full squad I made a few changes at half time and in the second half which in no way changed our dominant play. The win never looked in doubt and it was secured by another great passage of play that saw Olly cut in from the left and chip it over the Meadowdale keeper.

Well done to the full squad…next up Rothbury at home.

March rugby report

The rugby season has finally come to a close after another highly successful season for the Cheviot.

Having won the U13 County Cup 13 a-side competition in December, the next and final challenge of the season was the U13 County Cup 7’s. Full of confidence the team got off to an unusually slow start beating Bede Academy but then drawing with NSB, a team they had previously beat easily.

Topping our group the team went into the Cup Finals along with RGS and Dame Allan’s. First up was RGS, a team notorious for their strength and skill. After a hard fought match we lost 10-15. Due to other results in the group we had to beat Dame Allan’s by 3 tries to top the group on aggregate scores. Winning 15-5 and with the last play of the game the boys managed to find the space for Gus Singer, a captain who has lead by example this year, to run half the length of the field to score, sparking scenes on celebration.

A massive effort by all the players this season who have represented the Cheviot at U13 level.

The U12 have not had as many games this year but their season also finished with a County Cup 7s tournament at Dame Allan’s. In a tough group we lost to a very good St Thomas Moore team but then went on to beat RGS and Bede Academy.

This placed us in the Vase competition and in our final group were three independent school: RGS, NSB and Dame Allan’s. The boys were starting to find their rhythm by this point and the first team we played were NSB who we beat 20-10. After this outstanding performance we faced Dame Allan’s who we beat 25-10 with some scintillating play. The final game was to be against RGS, who we had beaten already in the first group stage. The Cheviot started slowly and were down 10-0 very quickly before finally getting back on track to pull the scores level at 10-10. With the final play of the game RGS managed to find some space on the edge and score a try in the corner to take the victory and the Vase.

A truly outstanding effort by all the U12 players and a group that I am very much looking forward to working with next season.

Mr Shaw and Mr Twentyman want to thank all the players for their commitment to training and playing this year as well as the parents and the Head teachers of both Chantry and Newminster for their continued support. Another fantastic season!

30.3 – House Football / Netball / Benchball

Another fantastic set of competitions for all our pupils took place on a much warmer day than last time! Congratulations to all pupils as you helped your house gain valuable points on the way to the House Championship.

31.3 – Y7 Girls Sky Try Rugby tournament at Kingston Park

Another fantastic tournament for our two Rugby League teams. This time we started with the game of the festival, pitting our two teams against each other. Friendships were definitely put on the shelf and the tackles flew in as both teams showed great determination and ability. Well done to ‘Fish Fingers’ who just edged the game against ‘Flying Pigs’! (They came up with their own names!) The rest of the tournament saw both teams beat the rest of their opposition and proved a fantastic platform going into the regional finals on the 7th April. As well as our usual star performers (Eadie, Kacy and Lucy), it was brilliant to see the development of the other girls, in particular Louise, Maisie, Ellie, Lola, Esme, Ruby and Hannah. Report on the Regional Final will appear after half-term.

3.4 – U13 Girls’ County Cup Semi-Final v Ponteland (home)

These teams have met several times this season with a mixed set of results but this was definitely going to be the most important game.

The game started evenly with Newminster edging the goal-scoring chances but also struggling a few times to deal with aerial through-balls. However whenever Ponteland did manage to get through our tight defense, Alysia was on high alert and throughout the game, pulled off some amazing saves. Newminster then stepped up their efforts and through great midfield play, put Lucy in on goal to score a brace in the 1st half. The second half continued in the same way as Alysia and our defense kept Ponteland out and our quality midfield battled well against a physical Ponteland team and continued to create chances. Ponteland managed a late consolation goal but the game was made secure with Lucy completing (another!) hat-trick. Ponteland gave a deserved ‘Girl of the Game’ award to Alysia, but I’d also like to congratulate Ruby and Orla in midfield who had a huge positive impact on this game. Well done girls and good luck in the Final!
