June update

30th June 2015Mrs K Shutler

Northumberland School Games

23 & 24 June

Well done to our pupils who attended this prestigious event. Prior to this, our teams had to compete against the other schools of our Sports Partnership to qualify. It ran very similar to an Olympics event, including: an Opening Ceremony; special guests from the world of sport; the actual competitions and a medal ceremony.

Over the two days we had a Bronze medal winning Y8 netball team, Silver for our Y5/6 Quadkids team and a fantastic Gold for the Y5/6 Girls football team. Special mention also goes to our Y8 Sports Leaders who ran the Quadkids event and entertainment provided by our Y8 Cheerleaders and our Samba band.

Sports Days

25 & 26 June

All our pupils took some part in our Sports Days in either Track or Field events or both! The events went particularly well with a fantastic level of competition. All pupils who took part and helped gain points for their House must be highly praised. Particular mention goes to James Herron (Y6 Long Jump), Joe Buxton (Y6 Howler throw), Josh Grenfell (Y5 High Jump) and the relay teams from Collingwood Y6 Girls, Dacre Y6 Boys, Howard Y7 Girls for breaking the school records (and Ben Waterfield’s record equaling High Jump)!

Final results + House winners – Field – Mitford; Track – Collingwood; Overall – Dacre.
Overall House winners for all Sports events this year will be announced after the Swimming Galas.

County Athletics event, Gateshead Stadium

27 June

Huge praise and congratulations go to our athletes who took part in this event. They qualified from the Area Event earlier this year, which in itself was a fantastic achievement, and from this we were the highest represented school in the Area. Well done to all those who took part, all of them can take great credit knowing they competed against the best athletes in the North East.

Full results will be available on their website.

Future events

30 June – Y8 Multi-Sports Festival at Ponteland Middle.
3 July – KS2 Swimming Gala
6 July – Y7/8 Girls’ Beach Rugby Tournament at Tynemouth
10 July – KS3 Swimming Gala

Y5/6 Quadkids Athletics Event

15th June 2015Mrs K Shutler
QuadkidsIn the blistering heat on 12 June, we entered 3 teams into this fantastic event in which every team member had to:
  • run a 75m sprint
  • a 600m run
  • a howler throw
  • a standing long jump.

Each member’s score for each event was added together to give a team score. All participants competed exceptionally well, and huge congratulations go to Team 1 who won the event and will now represent our partnership in the Summer Games on 24 June. A massive thank you and well done also goes to our Y8 Young Leaders who did a superb job officiating the entire event.

June Sports Update

U11s Girls’ Football tournament on 5 June

Well done to our girls football team who played in this playoff tournament at Ponteland. As Newminster, Cragside and Ponteland all finished on equal points at the top of the league this season, the winning team would be decided after a mini playoff.

Despite losing both games by the odd goal, the girls played exceptionally well with constant determination and effort. See Twitter for the ‘end of season’ celebratory photos!

I must also add that the season does actually still go on for these girls as they will be representing our Partnership in the Summer Games at Cramlington on 23 June.

Forthcoming sporting events:

  • 12 June – Y5/6 Quadkids athletics event at KEVI, 9:30 – 11:30am. Including our Y8 Sports Leaders.
  • 16 June – Area Athletics event at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow for Y6/7/8s. 10am – 3pm.

Rugby Update

1st June 2015Mrs K Shutler

Cheviot Final v Kings-2015-04-30-069This year has been hugely successful for the Cheviot rugby team. I have already written about the various successes this year but now the season is officially over I would to congratulate all the boys who represented the U13 school team this year. The trophy cabinet is looking extremely healthy once again after successfully winning The County Cup, The TSSSA Cup and the NSB 7’s.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents for their continued commitment and support as well as kind donations throughout the year which includes new playing kit, t-shirts and medals. The school has never been so well supported at home and away fixtures so thank you.

The school is now building its reputation nicely and I am hoping to see a high number of new players training next year. The U12’s started off really well this year but due to lack of fixtures their season ended early. As of September they will be the top team and I am already busy sorting fixtures.

If you have played for the school already or are new to rugby please come along and give it a go because the better the commitment the more fixtures we are able to fulfil.

Finally I would like to thank the Head Teachers, all office staff and all staff members who have supported me this year, your help is always appreciated.

Y7 & 8 Girls Rugby Tournament

Girls Rugby115 May at Druid Park

This was the last contact rugby tournament for the girls this year and both teams played with fantastic commitment and effort. Its really pleasing to see how much progress they’ve made this year. The standard of rugby from all teams involved was particularly high and it was great to see Newminster girls playing at this level. Well done!

There will be one last rugby tournament for all these girls on Monday 6th July on Tynemouth beach! They will be there for almost the full day.

Y8 Cricket Tournament

18Cricket 1 May at Longhirst.

We took 1 boys team and 1 girls team to this event and it was very pleasing to see them play some great cricket despite the pouring rain!

The lads played well in a very high standard tournament  and the girls made fantastic progress in their first attempt at the game.

U13s Girls Football League

18 May.Football

The girls football season has finally drawn to a close on what has undoubtedly been our most successful U13s girls team.

Despite just missing out on winning the league to add to their status of County Cup Finalists, they have played some fantastic football. Much more importantly they have played throughout the competition with unbelievable determination and positive attitude.

This was epitomized on the final 2 nights of the tournament: on the penultimate night with the league title still possible and some key players missing, the available girls said they would rather play and ‘die trying’ than forfeit the game; and on the last night with the league finished and only friendlies to play they insisted on playing.

A wonderful attitude to have!

March Sports Update

26th March 2015Mrs K Shutler

A fantastic fortnight for sport!

Girls rugby

On Tuesday 17 March we entered 2 teams into the area finals of the transition rugby tournament. The girls have improved massively over the year, which was demonstrated in their emphatic win over Chantry. They showed great team spirit throughout the tournament and it made it even more worthwhile to see that we were the only school to have enough interest to put 2 full teams in.

Boys rugby

The all conquering U13s took a back seat this time and a different team from Y7 and Y8 took to the field in a tournament at Bullocksteads. The lads played with superb commitment, enthusiasm and team spirit.

Girls football

DSC_1101We have now had 3 rounds of the U11s and U13s football league, with both teams playing some great football and notching up some impressive victories. Particular mention must go to the U11s in their emphatic double figure to nil win over Eastlea in which every member of the team scored at least 1.

But the performance of the season so far must go to the U13s, who came from 3-0 down to win 7-4 against Meadowdale in the greatest ever comeback to clinch a place in the County Cup Final on 5 May. Good luck girls. There are also further league games on 27.4, 12.5 and 18.5.

Boys football

The U11s achieved another fantastic first this week by being the first Newminster team to reach the County Cup Final on 30 April. The semi was a great spectacle with the football flowing from end to end. After James Allan put us in the lead with a great goal-scorers finish, Ponteland hit back with 2 goals, which would have been more, except for heroic keeping from Dan Lloyd. James McConnell then scored with a wonderful individual effort to take us to extra time. The score remained level, despite a potentially winning goal for Newminster ruled offside. The penalty shoot out couldn’t have been any more nerve-wracking with some great saves by both keepers taking it all the way to sudden death. After Ponteland missed, it was down to Tom Holden to win the game, and with a superbly taken pile driver, he smashed it into the roof of the net and sent the lads wild. Roll on the final! Even though I have picked out some players there, full credit must go to the entire squad who all played on top form. Well done!

With a slightly changed team they then played Horton Grange back in the league with a place in the league cup final up for grabs. The team played some of the best football I’ve seen all season and particular mention goes to how well the new/lesser used players integrated into the squad to give us a 7-0 win . A great team spirit and effort, well done!

Y5 skipping

30 pupils took part in the first ever Sports Partnership skipping competition on 23 March. The pupils performed individual, partner and group events as well as an awesome skip dance. The team finished in a very respectable 3rd place, with a total of 1 bronze, 8 silver and 1 gold medal for individual / paired performances.

Y8 Cricket

Well done to our Y8 cricket team who took part in the first tournament of the year. After having defeated all opposition their earned their place in the final only to be narrowly beaten by hosts, Bothal. A valiant performance by the lads, well done.

House matches

Rugby and dodgeball events this term produced some excellent performances and fantastic attitudes. These events are obviously looked at in terms of individual sporting abilities but I was even more impressed with the attitude and team work demonstrated by so many. My own personal highlight of the day was a fantastic rugby tackle by Katy Halliford, taking out not only Izzy McCormack but also ‘the staff referee’ on the other pitch! To protect her dignity she will obviously remain nameless. 😀 Many thanks to the staff referees and the Y8 Sports Captains who helped the events run smoothly. Huge congratulations to all those who took part.

The results for those events are:

  • Collingwood – 27
  • Dacre – 35
  • Howard – 30
  • Mitford – 30

And combined with the scores from last term the overall scores are now:

  • Collingwood – 85
  • Dacre – 86
  • Howard – 72
  • Mitford – 79

Very close and all to play for next term, when we have Sports day and Swim Gala.
