During the Spring Term, the English focus for pupils in Year 8, was the World War 1 play ‘Journey’s End,’ written by R.C. Sherriff and poetry from the period. In order to broaden the learning experience for our students and take ‘Learning Outside the Classroom,’ we invited the Army Cadets into school for the day.
The focus was to enable pupils to experience the transition from civilian to soldier; understand the importance of team work, responsibility to others, following orders and respecting authority. The day provided an opportunity for all pupils to take part in ‘Command Tasks,’ ‘Field Craft,’ scale a challenging ‘Climbing Wall’ and listen to a fascinating ‘WW1 Battlefield Presentation.’
The day proved to be a huge success, taking our students outside their comfort zone, where they were encouraged to embrace new challenges and in the process learn more about themselves too.
