On Thursday 28th January 20 Key Stage 3 girls took part in a fantastic STEM event specifically for girls in our region, at The Sage Gateshead. The event was organised and run by the Stemettes and Accenture.
We attended the event last year and had a really brilliant and informative day, so expectations were high for this years “bigger and better” event.
We weren’t disappointed. This year the event was on a larger scale and The Sage was not the only venue. There were other events running in Birmingham, Manchester and London simultaneously on the day. At one point we were even “Trending” on Twitter.

We took part in a “Hackathon” using the free web based game Code Warrior. This taught the girls javascript in a fun and challenging way, we all really got into it!
The girls were able to walk around the Sage during their breaks and talk to various north east businesses located at the many stalls set up at the event.
In the afternoon we not only got to listen to and question several very successful women in the Computing Industry and beyond but we took part in a collaborative Minecraft session. This was a really fun activity, the girls were asked to contemplate successful women in history and then think about what they would like their own legacy to be. They were then asked to build a monument to their future legacy using Minecraft Educational Software.
The day ended successfully with two of our girls at Newminster winning an Android Tablet from their earlier winning performances in the “Hackathon”. Well done to Isabella Hull in 7B and Lucy Coulson in 8A.
